French alternative broadband operator Free has delivered maximum speeds of 174 Mbit/s download and 18 Mbit/s upload using ADSL2+ technology, which it calls F-ADSL. At a distance of 1,800 meters from a central office, the download speed is approximately 120 Mbps. The technology opens the way for the new applications such as 3D high definition television, Free said. The company, whose DSLAM equipment is already ready for F-ADSL, without needing any type of modification, but existing versions of its Freebox customer premises equipment cannot be used to access this sort of bandwidth. Free is not planning to launch this commercially at the moment.
