From the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism:
    The 2006 Sports Capital Programme

The Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism is now inviting applications for funding under the national lottery-funded Sports Capital Programme.

This programme allocates funding to projects that are directly related to the provision of sports facilities and are of a capital nature. This means that the project must involve:

    * improving or building an asset; or
    * buying sports equipment that is securely stored and will be used for at least five years.

Funding can be allocated to the following organisations under the programme:

    * voluntary and community organisations, including sports clubs;
    * national governing bodies of sport and third level education institutions, where it is evident that the proposed facility will contribute to the regional and/or national sporting infrastructure; and
    * in certain circumstances, schools, colleges and local authorities (see the Guidelines, Terms and Conditions to the 2006 Programme for more information)

The 2006 Sports Capital Programme was advertised in the national press on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th November 2005. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is 5pm on Friday 20th January 2006. We will strictly observe this deadline.

The Department will assess all applications received in accordance with the guidelines, terms and conditions of the 2006 Sports Capital Programme. We strongly advise all applicants to read the guidelines, terms and conditions document thoroughly before applying for funding under the Programme.

(Note that you must still post a printed and signed copy of your MS Word application form, along with all supporting documentation, to the address below by the closing date for the 2006 Programme.

Seriously guys, any club, any NGB, all of you should be applying for this if at all possible. Last year saw nearly €55million given out to over 2000 projects, including Courtlough. The grant covers nearly anything a club or NGB would ever use other than ammunition and targets : the specific phrase is "non-personal sports equipment that will be used for at least five years". That's club guns, target changers, suis ascor systems, turning targets, safes, computers, PA systems, buildings, everything. You've got from now to January 20th to get the applications researched and prepared and handed in, and you're talking about tens of thousands of euros in terms of the scale of the projects. Want to replace all your target changers? Want to build a new clubhouse? Want to buy gear to do equipment control checks before sending your team to a competition so they don't get caught for rule violations over there? Want to stock the club's armoury for new shooters? Want to increase the security on your range to get ready for the new CJB amendments?

This is the biggest single grant going right now. Time to put pens to paper folks...

Well now that the closing date has passed, what did everyone ask Santa for then? We aksed him nicely for eight shiny new electronic targets.

    Here's hoping :)

    Is this run every year?

Yup lurcher, every year. And for the past few years, the amount being made available through it has risen every year as well. So if you missed the 2006 round, there's always 2007 to go for!

A piece of advice for those hoping to make an application next year:
    1. Get the previous years application form and guidelines. They remain pretty much the same from year to year.
    2. Decide what you want to apply for, and how much it's going to cost.
    3. Raise the funds required, you need a minimum of 30% of the total cost.
    4. Get all the supporting documentation required, or have a list of those items that you are going to need before the deadline.
    5. By the end of November (about the time the applications open), review your list and fill in all the gaps, or set in motion those items that need to be in date (Bank Statements etc.)
    6. Get the support of a local politician (Minister, TD or Councillor) - in that order. Do not adopt a scattergun approach here, go as far up the food chain as you can, but don't approach more than one politico. Political support is a two-way street; by asking for a politician's support you are implying support for him/her, and if they feel that you are handing out your application like snuff at a wake, they will not be inclined to go the extra yard for you, if there is not going to be a payoff for them at the end. Remember that if your application is successful, your friendly politician is going to want to make political capital from it. That's the Quid Pro Quo!
    7. Review your checklist and make your application - by hand
    8. Supply a copy of your application to your local helpful politician.
    9. Sit back and wait
