    Romanov claims girl 'tricked' Rix
VLADIMIR Romanov, the owner of Hearts, will tonight claim that a 15-year-old girl sexually abused by Graham Rix duped him into having sex with her for financial gain.
The latest controversial intervention by the Lithuanian multi-millionaire provoked a furious reaction last night from a leading children's charity and politicians.
Rix's appointment earlier this month as George Burley's successor at Tynecastle was widely condemned.
The new head coach of the Edinburgh football club served six months of a 12-month sentence in 1999 after pleading guilty to one charge of unlawful sex and another of indecent assault on the girl. He was placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years.
In tonight's BBC Scotland Frontline documentary, Ro-manov says: "Here (in Scotland) I was surprised at the tabloid press getting involved. When a girl comes and tricks a hero such as this coach and says she is older than she is and then sells her story for hundreds of thousands of pounds and then the story comes to life a second time . . .
"The first time they trick the English and then the Scottish public, which I think is a systematic crime, involving all those who want to make money out of it."
However, the judge's sum-ming up at Rix's trial at Knightsbridge Crown Court contradicts such views.
The judge said: "There is no evidence in this case at all to suggest . . . that this girl deliberately set out to get you . . . no evidence that she was the one that made all the running, and no evidence of her initiating any sexual activity, merely the response of the teenage girl to your flattery."
Margaret McKay, chief executive of Children 1st, Scotland's leading child welfare charity, said: "I don't think it is at all helpful for Mr Romanov to get himself involved in this. You don't blame children and young people for actions that adults perpetrate on them. The adults have to take the responsibility."
Roseanna Cunningham, an advocate and SNP MSP, said: "I think someone should take Mr Romanov to one side and tell him 'When you are in a hole' – which he is already by employing Graham Rix – 'you should stop digging'."
Rosie Kane, Scottish Socialist MSP, said: "It is very worrying that a powerful and wealthy man like Vladimir Romanov does not understand that it is up to men to know the boundaries . . . The onus is not on a young girl. It is ridiculous and out of order for him to suggest such a thing."

    Heard this on 5live also.
    Romanov wrote:
I gave these people full control to direct the club and in one year there was no result

I would have thought top of the SPL was a pretty good direction for any Scottish club....

Any Hearts fans here? What do you think of this guy?

Romanov is far too outspoken and "hands on" for Hearts good and I think the only reason he hired Rix is because no top name coach would take the job because of Romanovs reputation. The fact that he is now laying the blame on the 15 year old girl is just making is reputation even worse. Hearts as a club will suffer and the community will turn their back on them if this continues

To blame a 15 year old is madness.Rix should not be let manage again as hes on the sex offenders list for the next 10 years and im sure they have a few 15, 16 year old boys at hearts.

Its interesting that the rumour is that rix will be replaced after xmas if results dont improve.

I suppose being optimistic is no harm but i don't think i'll be betting on that one!!!

with a 15 year old girl - you've had unlawful sex, committed indecent assault, are a registered sex offender and any family or friends who might still acknowledge you are embarrassed or ashamed to be near you.

with a 16 year old girl - you've had lawful sex, committed no crime and are probably the envy of many of your mates!

Its a fine line. Bearing in mind all the false stories that have circulated about footballers and girls in recent years and the fact that the girl sold her story to the tabloids, I'd have some sympathy for Rix.

    isn't it 17???

and i suppose after hearts win the CL he will take over the Lithuanian national team, buy 22 brazilians and win the world cup, and the european championship. it would be funny if nobody told him that you cannot buy players for international level - he would probably give it a try.

Just bringing this thread up to show how much of a mad man Romanov is:
Hearts head coach Graham Rix is no longer selecting the side, according to several of the first team squad.

BBC Scotland has learned that Hearts players want a meeting with Vladimir Romanov, after Rix revealed the club owner is picking the team.

One player told BBC Scotland that Rix had said: "Romanov is pulling the strings, picking the team including the substitutes and has total control."

Another player claims Rix told him: "Mr Romanov is picking the team."

Meanwhile, the agent for Andy Webster has told BBC Scotland that he has ended negotiations over a new contract for the Scotland defender.

Webster has been dropped to the bench for Tuesday's visit to Dundee United and is not happy with the way team matters are being run.

Charlie Duddy said: "Negotiations over a new contract for Andy have been brought to an end permanently. We will not be re opening them."

Webster 17 months to run on his current deal.

"I am picking the team," said former Portsmouth manager Rix, when he was unveiled at Tynecastle on 8 November.

But it appears he has surrendered control of the 35-man first-team pool.

Rix was brought in to replace George Burley, who left the club amid reports of meddling from Romanov.

The Lithuanian banker has been responsible for several of the many new faces that have arrived at Hearts since he arrived in Edinburgh just over a year ago.

And, if he has been picking the team, he has been doing a pretty good job.

Hearts sit second in the SPL table, eight points behind leaders Celtic, and Tynecastle is full to capacity for almost every home game.

They are also firm favourites to win the Scottish Cup, having reached the last eight, while Celtic and Rangers have fallen by the wayside.

But supporters may be anxious to hear of unrest among players and the coaching staff.

It appears there are more twists and turns at Tynecastle this afternoon. It's understood Hearts head coach Graham Rix has told the squad he is not in charge of selecting the team for tonight's match at Dundee United. Six changes have been made to the starting line-up - including Scotland international defender Andy Webster being dropped to the bench - new signings Martin Petras and Ludek Straceny are set to make their debuts. This, once again, calls into question the relationship between the club's controversial owner, Vladimir Romanov, and the coaching staff at Tynecastle

Well he must be doing something right then because when rix first joined hearts they lost the first couple of matches. Their form has improved over the last month and i wonder why.

It is his club he can do what he feels is right. With rix in charge they were in danger of not getting second.

Sure, the 15-year old girl was at fault and Rix was the victim  Can't believe he's come out and said that. Was he even heard of back when this case was going on?
He does seem a bit over-zealous and hands on, if he is picking the team then he'll never attract a top manager to the club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

why does he want a manager if he does everything anyway?
i guess so he can have a scapegoat..
im disappointed though, i wanted hearts to win the SPL, looks unlikely now

also the 15 year old girl might not be as innocent as you think

Because he doesn't have the required coaching certifications

Romanov claims she was just trying to get a story to sell to the papers. Even if that is the case, Rix shouldn't have allowed himself to be seduced by a 15-year old. Whatever way it is painted, it was still sexual abuse.

I've never asked a girl for d, have you? Its a trust thing. There are a lot of 15 or 16 year olds that you wouldnt think of asking if they were over 17 because they look much older than that.
