    OK people, question time!

    If you could put together the ultimate service package that you would like your broadband provider to offer what would it be?

    I believe all the threads on IBB, Metro and Clearwire on Boards give full details:-

    1. Lack of actual speeds as advertised
    2. High Latency
    3. Poor Customer support
    4. BLocked ports
    5. Poor webstreaming
    6. Large downtimes

    The opposite would be the positives to the above.......... if you know what I mean

    ect..........

    Thanks, those are the kind of details that I am looking for.
    Now, as for services that a provider could offer beside plain vanilla access, what would you like to see?

    E.

    - Relatively high download speeds (3mb) as I share house with two other computer professionals.
    - Relatively high upload speed (same reason as above).
    - Low latency
    - Stability (latency shouldn't spike).
    - Little or no downtime.
    - Fair prices (in line with rest of EU).
    - Prefereably no line rental.
    - Relatively high cap and a fair policy towards breaking the cap (for instance NTL doesn't charge you for going over the cap, they only send you a letter if you consistently go way over the cap).
    - Good customer support (easy to reach, responsive and knowledgeable).

    In fact this is exactly what NTL are giving me at the moment and therefore I'm very happy with it, I couldn't imagine moving away from them.

    I just wish they would hurry up and bring out their own VoIP service (yes I know about Blueface), PVR and increase the speeds as rumoured.

    Yup I agree NTL are leading the field! and roll on 8 meg at christmas (I wish)

    /edit FIXED IP !!

    1 Unmetered brodband
    2 Synchronous connection (that actually works unlike IBB)
    3 ISP's that currently have the capability to deploy faster speeds to DEPLOY it and stop reigning in speeds until the market dictates otherwise (Yes NTL i'm talking to you)

    :rolleyes:

    10mbit down 10mbit up,
    No Download CAP,
    Fair Price,
    Proper Service.

    1) Honesty (no lies in case of problems)
    2) Synchronous connection
    3.) VPN traffic given higher priority
    4.) VoiP traffic allowed
    5.) Competent customer service 24/7
    6.) Low latency
    7.) Good Backbone Connection to the US/Europe
    8.) High Traffic allowance

    And I'm even willing to pay good money for someone offering this.

    10mbit Up/Down
    No Cap and No Throttling
    Low ping
    Fair price
    Good service - ie no down time and other problems.

    FULL binary newsgroup access so I don't have to find torrents anymore.

    The speed increases rumoured would suit me so maby lowering the price and upping the download limit to something less restrictive like 30gb or more and only a warning if you go over not the worry they may decide to charge you per mb. Full access to newsgroups would be nice although completly unlikly. And in the case of NTL actually rolling out the service to some more areas.

    Most importantly, reliability of the service and speed.
    Low latency
    Decent upload speed (DSL)
    No cap, or at least a cap at a decent level.

    And the option to install a Broadband-only phoneline with a lower line rental (this is aimed at Eircom, as BT already offer this, sadly BT Billing is pathetic).

    In the case of FWA, just give the service you promise.

    It is strange that no body has mentioned so far:

    1. clear and fair terms and conditions

    2. an accounts department that actually works

    3. reasonable minimum term for signup

    4. reasonable notification of termination

    5. ease of transfer between suppliers

    6. timely, honest and clear communication when and if service problems arise

    7. respect for peoples bank accounts ie isps should ensure that their staff realise that access to
    a customers bank account via direct debit is a privilege to be used properly and not willy nilly as they wish!

    I have never had any problems with IOLBB +, never down, never slow speeds.

    I would pay €60 per month for:
    5mb line
    5mb download
    1mb upload
    unlimited cap

    thats all folks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭ghost26ie

    unlimited cap
    5mb download
    512kb + upload
    rolling month contracts
    €50 per month

    - €50 per month;
    - subsidised for poor;
    - socially aware - provide for all, not just high density or high value areas;
    - privacy;
    - reliability;
    - service (including cheap on-site where there are problems);
    - no line rental;
    - big caps;
    - cheap calls - whether VoIP or otherwise;
    - big bandwidth / high speed;
    - quality HD content (I know, not to be expected from ISP, but if you build it, they will come?)

    Proper up front specification of Committed Information Rate (The data rate at or below which you should see essentially zero packet loss), none of this Peak rate and contention ratio nonsense which gives rise to false expectations. The CIR should be at least sufficient for one VoIP call using a G711 codec, i.e. about 85000 bits/s.
    Clear specification of burst rates and burst sizes. Properly designed backhaul network implementing per flow (or at least per IP) queueing so that the per customer CIR is protected during oversubscription, and diffserv so that the customers can designate traffic priorities.
    Sufficient traffic capacity to INEX and to tier 1 Internet providers.

    Tech support who actually respond, are honest and know what they are talking about.

    ISPs should be ISPs only. Running a VoIP service as well is a conflict of interest and probably runs foul of the competition rules. Divide the advertized upload rates for Metro by the contention ratio and you will find that, except for the expensive EUR300 a month Metro Xpress, there is not ennough bandwidth for VoIP via a third party provider e.g. Blueface. Of course Metro includes their own VoIP service but the call rates are not impressive. Perhaps Comreg may have comething to say about this?
