G729 softphone?

In my continuing attempts of trying to get VoIP (Blueface) to work with Clearwire, it seems I need to use the G729 codec. This is what they're telling me.

At this point I just want to test that it works before I go mad on equipment purchase, so I'm looking for a free softphone that supports G729. I did a bit of googling and stumbled upon Firefly but it seems to need a 3rd party G729 codec to work.

So... does anybody know of a softphone that supports G729 or how I get Firefly to work with G729?

This seems odd that you are being told you need to use G729. Who told you this? The only difference (apart from a very marginal decrease in voice quality) between the standard G711 PCMU codec and G729 is a bandwidth decrease from about 80kb/sec to around 30kb/sec. A Clearwire connection should be confortably able to handle the higher speed.

Clearwire do filter RTP traffic based on the codec. If you want to use VoIP on Clearwire you normally need to:

    1. Ring CLearwire support and ask them to configure your Clearwire radio to let the RTP through,
    2. Check that your VoIP provider supports g729 and make sure you are forcing the RTP stream to use g729. Don't rely on the normal negotiation since both ends of the VoIP call will usually negotiate g711 and that will end up being blocked by Clearwire.

Alternatively you can use a non-RTP based VoIP Protocol such as IAX or possibly Skype. Softphones that support IAX are FireFly and IAXComm.

There's actually a long and interesting thread on this very subject going on over in the broadband forum at :

It does have G729 support, but I can't get the soft phone to work at all. I suspect it's locked to a particular service or something. It does mention something about a private build when it's installed. Or I've done something wrong...
