Gorey & Rosslare rail disruption continues due to landslip at Arklow; Bray-Greystones remains closed by Corporate Communications

    UPDATE: 15.40hrs, 6th February 2009

Iarnród Éireann advises customers that disruption to Gorey Commuter and Rosslare Intercity services is continuing, due to a landslip at a rail embankment between Arklow and Gorey.

Along with the Bray to Greystones DART, these services had been disrupted since Monday as the line had been closed between Bray and Greystones due to rockfall close to the entrance of the first tunnel on Bray Head.

However, a landslip occurred on Wednesday at a rail line embankment south of Arklow, and as a result, Gorey commuter and Rosslare-Dublin Intercity rail services are suspended entirely on the line between Bray and Gorey.

Service arrangements for remainder of week

    DART

Bus transfers will operate between Bray and Greystones for all DART services from now until further notice. All other DART services will operate normally, from Howth/Malahide to Bray.

    Gorey Commuter and Rosslare Intercity

Gorey commuter services will also be substituted by bus services from Bray to Gorey. Rosslare Intercity services will be substituted by bus services between Bray and Gorey.

    Arklow-Gorey landslip

The landslip has occurred on a high embankment over which the rail line runs, just over 2 miles south of Arklow. As a result, remedial works will be undertaken, and it is estimated the line will remain closed until this Sunday, 8th February.

    Bray-Greystones rockfall

A significant amount of rock has fallen near the entrance to the first tunnel on Bray Head. Support wire nets have been damaged, and the area remains high risk, with the potential for further falls from the cliff face.

A team of experts are assessing the situation, to ensure materials can be removed without dangers to workers involved, and to enable the line is made safe for the operation of trains as soon as possible.

However, given the hazards involved, it is expected that this section will remain closed for a number of weeks.

Iarnród Éireann apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused. Full service details will be updated at this website.

Gorey & Rosslare rail disruption continues until Monday; Bray-Greystones closed up to Wednesday by Corporate Communications

    UPDATE: 14.45hrs, 12th February 2009

Iarnród Éireann advises customers that disruption to Gorey Commuter and Rosslare Intercity services is continuing, due to a landslip at a rail embankment between Arklow and Gorey.

Along with the Bray to Greystones DART, these services had been disrupted since Monday 2nd February as the line had been closed between Bray and Greystones due to rockfall close to the entrance of the first tunnel on Bray Head.

However, a landslip occurred on Wednesday 4th February at a rail line embankment south of Arklow, and as a result, Gorey commuter and Rosslare-Dublin Intercity rail services are suspended entirely on the line between Bray and Gorey.

However, the rail line will reopen at Arklow by lunchtime on Monday 16th February. Furthermore, the line at Bray Head will reopen on Thursday 19th February. The public footpath at Bray Head will remain closed until further notice.

    Service arrangements during disruption

    DART

Alternative bus services will operate between Bray and Greystones for DART services.

As a result, remedial works are being undertaken, the line remains closed. It will reopen by lunchtime on Monday 16th February.

    Bray-Greystones rockfall

A significant amount of rock has fallen near the entrance to the first tunnel on Bray Head. Support wire nets have been damaged, and the area remains high risk, with the potential for further falls from the cliff face.

Work continues to stabilise the rockface, and the line will reopen for first services on Thursday 19th February.

Iarnród Éireann apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused. Full service details will be updated at this website, and journey planner information is available through the timestable search at our homepage www.irishrail.ie

Bus drivers to stage one-day strike
    watch Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:20

Bus drivers at Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus will mount a one-day strike on Saturday 28 February in protest at 600 planned redundancies at the two State companies.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the national executive of the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) this afternoon.

A further two-day strike is planned for 9 and 10 March.

NBRU General Secretary Michael Faherty said the stoppage on 28 February would coincide with the sacking of 160 drivers at Dublin Bus.

Mr Faherty said: 'The drivers want to do something to support those being let go.

'Targeting new drivers on probation as an easy option to introduce cuts is an unfair and lazy way to make savings, and also impacts on the travelling public.

'The planned cuts and withdrawal of services will decimate rural Ireland, in particular the young, elderly, and unemployed who can't afford private transport.'

In a statement Dublin Bus says it has not yet received official notification of any industrial action by the drivers' unions.

The company says it has no choice but to implement the cost-cutting plan at the start of next month.

The Minister for Transport has said in the Dáil that he wants an efficient, effective transport service for the country, which meets the needs of customers.

Noel Dempsey said he had secured an investment of over €313m and there was not anymore money to give to the bus and rail companies.

He was responding to Labour Deputy Tommy Broughan who said the workers at Dublin Bus had voted to go on strike because of his handling of public transport policy. He asked the Minister why there was no voluntary redundancy option at Dublin Bus.

Taxi drivers staged another protest in Dublin today calling for a moratorium on new licences, as they say there is not enough work for the number of drivers now available in Dublin.

The railway line between Ballymena and Coleraine (Belfast-Derry Line) is to close for 3 months from the end of March.
This phase will include a five mile track relay between Ballymena (Broughdone) and Ballymoney. An estimated 1,250 tonnes of new rail will be used to complete the project. Already more than 1,200 tonnes of ballast have been dropped along the track and temporary new engineering facilities have been built in Coleraine in order to service trains. These facilities will mean trains can be stabled in Coleraine in order to provide passengers with a full rail service between Coleraine and Londonderry / Portrush during the closure period.
