    N32 Road Closure

Dublin Airport Authority would like to advise passengers travelling to Dublin Airport that significant traffic disruptions may occur from next week due to major road works at the M1/M50 junction. A major upgrade of the existing M1/M50 interchange, with the opening of new free-flow lanes, will result in significant traffic diversions during the coming months.

On Monday, March 16, the N32 link road to Malahide and Clarehall will close for one week to enable the lifting into place of a new overpass. Passengers and airport employees are advised to use alternatives routes to the Airport.

On March 21, 22, 25, 27 and 30 the N32 will be reduced to one lane.

On April 2, the road will again be fully closed for the entire day.
Closures of the M1, both north and south bound, will take place during April, May, June and July. Details of all related traffic diversions will be posted closer to the dates.

Taxi protest to disrupt traffic on Friday
    ALISON HEALY

MAJOR TRAFFIC disruption is expected in Dublin on Friday when a convoy of up to 3,000 taxis travel towards the city centre during morning rush hour in an ongoing protest over the number of taxis in the capital.

The Taxi Drivers for Change group objects to what it says is a lack of regulation in the sector, which has seen taxi numbers in the city rising to more than 16,000 in recent years. This will be their seventh protest in recent weeks and is expected to cause the most disruption, according to Jim Waldron, one of the group’s founders.

The group is encouraging taxi drivers to congregate at the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, the Airside Retail Park in Swords and in the city centre at 8am.

They will then make their way to the office of the Commission for Taxi Regulation on Fitzwilliam Square, where a meeting of the commission’s advisory council will be taking place. The protest is expected to finish at 2pm. The group is asking drivers not taking part in the protest to stop working from 8am to 2pm in a gesture of solidarity.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey had refused to meet the group, Mr Waldron said, and last week’s Goodbody report had caused great anger among drivers.

The report rejected their demands to suspend the issuing of new licences and denied that their earnings had collapsed. Taxi drivers have claimed that fellow drivers are turning on each other because of the fierce competition for fares.

Pat Connors, who has been in the business for 25 years, said he had three unsettling incidents with fellow drivers and these incidents were becoming a daily occurrence.

There was an unspoken rule that taxi drivers did not overtake one another unless a driver was not making reasonable progress. They also avoided picking up a fare within 100 yards of a taxi rank but Mr Connors said these unspoken rules were constantly flouted.

In one incident, he claimed he was assaulted by a driver at a rank who believed he had gone ahead of him. Another time, a driver who had attempted to pass him on several occasions flicked his lit cigarette at him because he got to a fare first. On the third occasion, a driver overtook him on Wexford Street and clipped his car in a bid to pick up a passenger first.

He said taxi drivers were so desperate that they would nearly take the fare out of someone else’s car.

Another taxi driver told how a driver swung a punch at him after he stopped to pick up a fare and the other driver believed he was entitled to it. “The fare was sitting in my car watching and told me to report it but what’s the point?”

Taxi Drivers for Change said the group did not condone such behaviour but it was happening because drivers were so stressed.

Ireland's rugby squad have returned home to a heroes' welcome after their historic Six Nations win.

Watch the Grand Slam Homecoming Live at 4.30pm

The management and team arrived at Dublin Airport this afternoon and were met by an estimated 2,000 fans.

Declan Kidney's men sealed the clean sweep after narrowly beating Wales in a nail-biting match that ended 17-15, the first Grand Slam in 61 years.

Celebrations erupted across the country last night as revellers toasted the memorable win.

A civic reception will be held for the team in the heart of Dublin this afternoon, outside the Mansion House on a specially erected stage.

Route of civic reception for Ireland rugby team

Dawson Street will be closed to traffic all day due to the event, which is scheduled for 4.30pm.

Entry to the reception will be via Nassau Street only and those wishing to attend are advised to arrive no later than 4.00pm.

Last night Taoiseach Brian Cowen led the tributes to the squad saying their achievements were nothing short of superb.

Mr Cowen said the triumph would go down in the history books as one of Ireland's greatest sporting victories.

Sports Minister Martin Cullen described the win as a magnificent occasion, while Enda Kenny, leader of Fine Gael, said the team had made the entire country proud.

Most of those watching at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium had not been born when Ireland won their only previous grand slam in 1948.

DAA Statement Re Planned Industrial Action
The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has been informed by SIPTU and Mandate that its members plan to take industrial action at Dublin, Cork and Shannon Airports as part of ICTU’s national day of action next Monday, March 30.

SIPTU has indicated that its members at Dublin, Cork, and Shannon Airports plan to stop work between 4.00am and noon on Monday. Mandate members at Dublin and Cork Airports have also indicated that they will take industrial action on March 30.

The DAA is disappointed that union members have opted for this course of action, particularly as the company last week invited all union representatives to attend the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) to discuss the company’s deteriorating financial situation as a matter of urgency.

The DAA has informed staff that no decision will be taken in relation to the payment of pay increases under the national wage agreement until the company has concluded a major cost recovery programme, which is close to completion.

As the matter has been referred to the LRC, it is inappropriate at this time for union members to take industrial action that will seriously inconvenience tens of thousands of passengers.

The DAA urges its trade unions to attend the LRC talks and not to engage in any disruptive industrial action until this process is complete.

Following an invitation Dublin Bus attended talks at the Labour Court this afternoon. The Labour Court has decided to clarify a number of issues contained in their earlier recommendation. They will issue the clarifications to the Company and the Trade Unions early next week.

The no 2 route now also arrives and departs at Dublin Airport 20 times a day providing customers with an excellent value for money alternative to travelling to the Airport by car as it means they can avoid taxi fares or car parking charges. Using the Port Tunnel also significantly reduces journey times between Dublin city centre and Dublin Airport.

The Dublin-Rosslare route services major population centres such as Arklow, Gorey, Enniscorthy, Wexford Town and Rosslare Harbour and a number of towns along the route. The journey time from Rosslare to Dublin Airport is 3 hours and 50 minutes.

Fares on the route provide excellent value for money with customers able to travel from Wexford to Dublin Airport for just €19 return. Return fares from other destinations are - Enniscorthy-Dublin Airport €18, Gorey-Dublin Airport €16.50, and Arklow-Dublin Airport €15.

“Bus Éireann is delighted to provide an enhanced service for customers travelling between Rosslare and Dublin. These improvements will provide passengers with a comfortable, relaxing and great value for money way of getting to Dublin city and Dublin Airport. With fuel prices and car parking charges being so high, it has never been easier to save money by leaving the car behind and travelling with Bus Éireann,” said Andrew McLindon, Media and PR Manager, Bus Éireann.

Journey Times on Bus Éireann Galway-Doughiska Service to Fall By Up to 10 Minutes with Introduction

Bus Éireann is anticipating a further reduction in journey times on its popular Galway-Doughiska service of up to 10 minutes following the introduction by Galway City Council of the outward bus lane on the Dublin Road.

Bus Éireann launched the high frequency service between the city and the fast growing community of Doughiska in mid-2007 to meet the growing demand for public transport in the area and since then the service has proven highly popular with the travelling public because of its short journey times due to the use of the inward bus lane on the Dublin Road.

According to Brian Connolly, Regional Manager, Bus Éireann, the introduction of the new bus lane will result in a significant further improvement in the service.

“Bus Éireann very much welcomes this advancement in bus priority measures by Galway City Council. We have already seen the benefits of being able to use bus lanes with passenger numbers continually growing on the Doughiska service and having bus lanes in both directions on the Dublin Road will now further reduce journey times for passengers and encourage even more people to transfer from their car to the bus,” said Connolly.

Bus Éireann’s Galway-Doughiska service operates every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday. Services on a Sunday operate every 30 minutes.

The introduction of the new bus lane will also reduce journey times on a number of local services using the Dublin Road, as well as Expressway services such as Galway-Dublin and Galway-Limerick-Cork.

The establishment of the Galway-Doughiska service was facilitated by the introduction of new buses into the Bus Éireann Galway fleet under Transport 21.
