There may be delays on Sunday due to the heavy volume of traffic passing through the roadworks for the GAA final in Dublin. * Anyone going to or from Tipperary / Golden / New Inn who would normally enter and exit the M8 at junction 9 is being diverted through Cashel and using J8 instead. These works are until mid November.

Temporary Road Closures on the R348 -Athenry – Derrydonnell Road by Corporate Communications

Temporary Road Closures to Facilitate Bridge Renewal Works on the R348 (Mid September 2009 – Mid October 2009)

In order to re-open the Western Rail Corridor it is necessary to close the R348 Athenry – Derrydonnell Road at Prospect for a distance of approximately 250m from its junction with the L-3103 Ballygarraun Road to its junction with the mini roundabout at prospect in order to facilitate the renewal of the existing rail bridge deck at OB167. The intended closure dates are as follows,

    • 11a.m on Friday 18th September, 2009 to 4p.m on Monday, 21st September, 2009
    • 11a.m on Friday 25th September, 2009 to 4p.m on Monday,28th September,2009
    • 10a.m to 4p.m on Sunday 4th October, 2009
    • 10a.m to 4p.m on Sunday 11th October, 2009

The construction works will require the road to be closed to road users in order to facilitate the removal of the existing rail bridge deck, and the construction of a new precast concrete deck with associated road containment and surfacing works.

    Alternative Route

Regional traffic travelling from Galway on the N6 wishing to access Athenry via the R348 Derrydonnell road will be restricted access at the N6/R348 junction at Derrydonnell. Instead traffic will continue east along the N6 to Craughwell to its junction with the R347 Craughwell-Athenry Road. Traffic will turn left onto the R347 and continue to its junction with the R348 at Cemetery Cross. Traffic can gain access to Athenry town by continuing north along the R347 or turn left onto the R348 until the end of the diversion at Prospect mini roundabout. Please note access from the R348 Athenry –Derrydonnell Road to the L-3103 Ballygarraun Road will remain open with the use of temporary traffic lights facilitating a stop go shuttle system at this junction adjacent to the bridgeworks.

Regional traffic travelling from Athenry wishing to access the N6 via the R348 Derrydonnell Road at Ennis Bridge, Prospect will be diverted onto the R347 Athenry-Craughwell Road at Cemetery Cross. Traffic will travel south along the R347 until its junction with the N6. Traffic will turn right onto the N6 towards Galway or left onto the N6 towards Loughrea.

Local traffic wishing to access the L3105 Raheen Road from the R348 Derrydonnell Road and the L3103 Ballygarraun Road can do so by using the new Inner Relief Road (Former IDA access road at Beirne Mech).

    Bridgeworks

To keep traffic disruption to a minimum while this necessary Bridge deck renewal is carried out our contractor will need to work through from 11am on Friday to 4pm on Monday of both weekends as listed above. Iarnród Éireann apologises for any disruption caused due to these necessary works. We would like to thank you for your continued support for this project and look forward to the opening of the Western Rail Corridor to our mutual advantage in the near future.
