Cool Victor.... any idea of the disruptions to the rail services? or where I can find them for this week coming? A friend and I have to travel to Mayo on Friday and I'm concerned there will be a problem!
DeV.0 -
I'm sure they'll come up with something. :pac: Things have been temperamental with the floods and cold. Possible delays Hazelhatch-Portarlington, but the rest of the route seems to have been mostly behaving itself and the timetable has some padding anyway.
Timetable: www.irishrail.ie/your_journey/printed_timetables.asp but check the Journey Planner and RealTime Train Info on their front page.
The one thing to watch out for is one afternoon service that splits at Athlone - half the train goes to Galway, the other half Mayo. Make sure you are in the correct carriage, but take the automatic announcements with a grain of salt - lots of mediocrity on this since it was introduced last month.
Note that most services to Ballina and Foxford (that is, not Wesport & Castlebar) mean a change at Manualla Junction.
Look out for the bargain fairs, as cheap as €10 single, but possibly not on a Friday / Sunday evening. Web fare much cheaper than buying at the station. Collect tickets with any credit card in your name with the reservation number from the orange machines or from the ticket desk. Booking seats is possible, although not always respected by your fellow passengers or Irish Rail. If you miss your booked train, you can use the ticket later in the day, but may have to pay a supplement.
Snacks and drinks from the trolley on most services, but trains with first class should also have a dining car. Electricity at your seat, but no wi-fi, bring a O2 or similar dongle for the laptop. Coverage will vary though.
Heuston can be busy, especially on Friday evenings, so allow some extra time. Platform numbers usually only declared when train is ready for boarding. Tickets needed for the barrier entering and leaving the platforms.
Keep an eye on travel alerts here, on www.irishrail.ie or www.railusers.ie/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=21

Sorry if not the appropriate place.
I need to get from Sligo to Cork today, I'm guessing the train would be the safest way. Anyone know of any delays - or risk of being stuck in Dublin for the night?0 -
The floods and the first of the snow did affect things in Longford, but things have been mostly OK on the Sligo line, with the exception of a train failure in Dublin yesterday. Late trains from Sligo have a habit of being delayed between Longford and Maynooth.
Dublin-Cork has been fickle at times, but you always get there.
You should be able to buy a through ticket Sligo-Connolly-Heuston-Cork (including Luas / bus), but check the pricing. Again the web fares are the best option.
There is an alternative in getting a bus to Galway and then another to Cork, but on the train at least you can (mostly) get food, walk about, use the toilet, etc.0 -
