Bus Eireann - new Cork city bus routes

Bus Éireann Launches Two New Routes in Cork

    Monday 21 April 21 2008

Two new bus services which will enable hundreds more people in Cork city to choose public transport on a daily basis are to be officially launched by Bus Éireann today Monday April 21st.

The new No 10A and the No 16 routes, serving the well populated suburbs of Skehard and Rochestown respectively, are operated by a number of new low floor wheelchair accessible city buses, manufactured in Northern Ireland by Wrights Bus.

Funding provided to Bus Éireann under Transport 21 to acquire additional buses for the city has made the introduction of the new routes possible.

The new services will be officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Donal Counihan and the Chairman of Bus Éireann, Dr John Lynch at the Clarion Hotel, Lapp’s Quay at 12.00 hrs.

Dr John Lynch said:“Under Transport 21, Bus Éireann is introducing 30 vehicles into the Cork fleet in 2008, a combination of additional and replacement city buses, single deck coaches and double deck coaches. All vehicles are wheelchair accessible and the addition of these new buses to the fleet in Cork means that the city service fleet is now 100% fully accessible. The additional vehicles are enabling Bus Eireann to improve existing services for our customers, and to introduce new services, such as the 10A and the 16, for which there is strong local demand."

He added: “These new services are creating jobs opportunities. In Cork alone, 20 additional drivers will be recruited this year to work the new routes.”

    - The new 10A bus service -
The 10A route operates from City Centre (South Mall) to Mahon Point and Jacobs Island via Boreenmanna Road. The 10A complements the existing No.10 service which operates between the City Centre (South Mall) and Mahon Point and Jacobs Island via the Ballinlough Road. The 10A operates Monday to Friday, from 07.30 to 19.25, with 15 services daily.

    - The new 16 bus service -
1The 16 route operates from City Centre (South Mall) to Clarkes Hill (Mount Oval) via Rochestown Road returning to the City Centre via Garryduff, Maryborough Hill and Douglas.

The 16 route operates a total of 26 services daily Monday to Saturday from 07.30 to 20.25 and 11 services on Sundays. The new route complements the existing 223 service from Monkstown serving Rochestown Road and the 222 service from Carrigaline which operates via Maryborough Hill.

    - The local perspective -
Mr Joe Fitzgerald, Bus Éireann Regional Manager South said:

“This new 10A route provides a very important link for the residents of Skehard and Boreenmanna Road to the city centre in one direction and to Mahon Point Shopping Centre and Jacobs Island in the other direction. This new 16 service provides an essential service for the expanding population in the area of Mount Oval and Garryduff and provides vital connections for people travelling into the city centre.”

“The introduction of these new services also means people can take the greener option by availing of public transport to get to and from the city centre.”

    - First Customers Rewarded -
At today’s launch, the first customers of both new services will be presented with complimentary travel vouchers. Liam O’ Sullivan from Blackrock, Chris Murphy from Mount Oval and Cillian Pleimeann from Broadale were the first passengers on the new routes.

    - More and Better Services in the Pipeline -
Additional improvements are planned by Bus Éireann for the Cork area later in 2008, including:
    • A higher frequency service on Route No 5 (Kent Station - CIT)
    • A higher frequency service on Route No 8 (Bishopstown-Mayfield)
    • A higher frequency service on Route No 14 (City to Cork University Hospital)

    - Bus Éireann in Cork: Facts at a Glance -
    • A total of 12.5 million customers travel with Bus Éireann on Cork city and suburban services annually.
    • Bus Éireann employs a total of 560 people in Cork city and county, including 70 part time school bus drivers
    • Bus Éireann operates a fleet of more than 230 buses in Cork.

Road Closure-Tulla Road Bridge from Monday the 12th of May by Corporate Communications

Iarnród Éireann are currently undertaking extensive works along the Western Rail corridor in order to facilitate the re-opening of the line early in 2009.

As part of this major upgrade of the Limerick to Galway Rail Line the existing Corravarrin Railway Bridge on the R352 Tulla Road, Ennis requires renewal. Iarnród Éireann in association with Clare County Council propose to carry out these works from Tuesday 6th May 2008 for a period of approximately eight weeks. The completion of these works, while not only necessary for the reopening of the railway line, will also provide a pedestrian/cycle walkway beneath the bridge on the southern side of the Tulla road, provide an improved height clearance beneath the bridge and facilitate the upgrading of foul sewer infrastructure in the road required to service the Roslevan, Knockaderry, Knockanoura, Cappahard and Newpark area.

Practical construction considerations and Health and Safety requirements dictate that a full road closure will be required for the initial phase of work to be undertaken (sewer upgrade and bridge demolition) with a single lane closure required for a period thereafter to facilitate completion of the works. In consultation with Clare County Council and the proposed contractor the planned full road closure will be from the 12th May 2008 to the 2nd June 2008 inclusive. Thereafter until completion of works a single lane closure will apply daily between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. There will be pedestrian access maintained during the planned closure.
Please see attached diversionary routes as previously advertised by Clare County Council.

Iarnród Éireann would like to apologise for the inconvenience these necessary works will cause and every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
Should you have any queries please contact the Western Rail Corridor helpline on 1890 6565691.

    Diversionary routes:

    Traffic to Ennis
    Option 1-
to access Ennis South via the Clare road
All vehicular traffic travelling to Ennis, west of the Corravarrin Railway Bridge, from Toureen, Spancilhill, Clooney, Tulla and East Clare, on the R352 is advised to take the second exit from the "Tulla Road Roundabout" [west of the N18 Ennis Bypass] and travel via the slip road onto the N18 Ennis Bypass southbound. Traffic wishing to access Ennis west of the road closure at the Corravarrin Railway Bridge on the R352 Tulla Road from the area west of the N18 Ennis Bypass [between the N18 Ennis Bypass and the road closure] is advised to travel East on the R352 to the "Tulla Road Roundabout" [west of the N18 Ennis Bypass] and take the second exit to access the N18 Ennis Bypass northbound via the slip road. Diverted traffic is then advised to travel north for 3.2 kilometres and take the first exit (signed R458 Ennis and Barefield) to the "Barefield Roundabout", take the first exit for Ennis and proceed to the "Barefield South Roundabout". Traffic from Ennis

All vehicular traffic travelling from Ennis, west of the Corravarrin Railway Bridge, towards Toureen, Spancilhill, Clooney, Tulla, East Clare and onwards is advised of the following alternative routes.

Option 1 - via Clare road, N85 and N18 Ennis bypass

Diverted traffic is then advised to travel northbound for approximately 3.2 kilometres and take the first exit (signposted for R352 Tulla and Scariff). Diverted traffic is advised to follow this slip road onto the "Tulla Road Roundabout" [west of the N18 Ennis Bypass]. Diverted traffic wishing to travel east to Toureen, Spancilhill, Clooney, Tulla, and Scariff and onwards is then advised to take the second exit to the R352 and proceed as appropriate. Option 2 - via Gort Road, R458 and N18 Ennis Bypass
Alternatively, traffic diverting from Ennis is advised to travel north from Ennis via the Gort Road and the R458 [originally the N18] for approximately 5 kilometres via the Gort Road and Barefield. Approximately 600 metres south of Barefield at the "Barefield South Roundabout" diverted traffic is advised to take the second exit and travel to the "Barefield Roundabout", take the second exit passing under the N18 underpass and travel via the slip road to access the N18 southbound. Diverted traffic will then travel south on the N18 Ennis Bypass for approximately 3.4 kilometres and take the first exit (signposted for R352 Tulla and Scariff) and follow the slip road to the "Tulla Road Roundabout" [east of the N18 Ennis Bypass]. From next Wednesday, Slieve Bloom Coaches are cancelling the 7.15am service from Tullamore to Dublin and the 6.15pm Dublin to Tullamore service is also cancelled.

The timetable on their website (www.slievebloomcoaches.com) does not yet reflect the cancelled services however a notice went on display on their buses this morning.

I'd ask anyone affected by these cancellations to call Slieve Bloom on 057 8624416 to let them know about the disruption it will cause for you.

    Thanks,
