Posted the following (Italics) in "Computers" folder, being unaware of the existence of this one so repeating here (with thanks to all who tried to help before)

    Hello all,

Wondering if you can help me with a games related problem. I recently had wireless broadband installed via Cellcom who are the only providers in Moycullen, Co.Galway. As I understand it, they are drawing their signal from Irish broadband. It's 512 each way with a contention ratio of 20:1. I am quite happy with the service and browsing is fine.

When I try to game however, the multiplayer interface informs me that it has found 4000 odd servers (CoD2) but nothing ever appears in the menu. I have disabled my own firewall, windows firewall is already disabled. Irish broadband do not block ports and cellcom inform me that there should be no problem on their end. There are no router problems - I have a fixed ip address and all appropriate ports are open.

I downloaded Xfire and sometimes it will pick up on UK servers with good ping (50) but when I try to connect I just get "awaiting connection" for ages. I am totally frustrated by this and would be indebted to anyone who could offer a solution.

As an update, and most bizarrely, while fiddling around I suddenly found that CoD2 had detected a german server with a piing of 80. I was able to join this small server (12 players) and had fantastic, lag-free fun - in fact it was really smooth. I was called away after 20 minutes to attend to babies and when I got back the server was no longer appearing, nor were any other. At this point I think the problem must be with either my pc or ISP and since I was able to get on once I am guessing the latter. Any thoughts?

That sounds very weird... Sorry, wouldnt really have a clue what the problem is. Try reinstalling the game and updating to latest patch ?

Could also be down to a crap network setup and not having enough backhaul for all the people curently on the service.

    Ronan,

I find that implausible - this is a very new service in the first place and all I am looking for is a list of servers, not exactly demanding.

When I come across problems that make NO sense I format !! I think when ports are blocked the game doesn`t work at all, since yours did then I doubt thats it.
I`m amazed with the ping you got and it seemed stable?! Theres hope yet! Have you got the latest patch for cod2 and also cod2 uses puckbuster doesn`t it? Perhaps its someting to do with that, do you have the latest version?
    Have you tried other games?

Thanks for the links ronan|raven, quite interesting. I don't work for cellcom, I'm just giving bemused a hand here but I have to say that cellcom's service should not be as bad as IBB since it has a lower contention ratio (20:1 for 512K/512K). That means just 120 customers in moycullen from a 3Mb feed which is not that bad.

I was worried to read the email (in one of the linked threads) that rufty^ received which stated that internet gaming was not supported as priority was being given to the 'more serious internet user'. That's a load of balls as most internet usage revolves around porn and downloading illegal software, this is most true in the evening time when people are not doing serious (as in business) work and therfore that argument does not hold up. I wonder did cellcom take that line when they were applying for the community BB scheme in order to improve their chances of getting the license?...maybe now they can relax a bit?

Bemused is up and running, gaming online in moycullen! Cellcom set him up with a different IP address and it worked. Must be a firewall on the range he was on previously.

he is getting great pings too. I'm sure he'll post an update once he can drag himself away from COD2.
