    Hi,

I am getting pings of 2 secs plus to most addresses. Could this have anything to do with my wireless set up?

I am using the new Netopia router supplied to me with a Sitecom 802.11b card in my laptop.

I am currently sitting about 10 feet from router.

Run a tracert to those sites and paste the results back here.

OK the tracert (Why didn't I think of that) looks slightly troubling:

    Tracing route to google.ie [216.239.57.99]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 27 ms 4 ms 4 ms 192.168.1.254
    2 30 ms 18 ms 20 ms b-ras1.bbh.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.155.19]

Looks like it's Ericom's network rather than my setup?

Looks like their network allright. Isn't 200ms 0.2 seconds not 2 seconds? (Still slow for an Irish site though)

it was over 2400ms a while ago. It had improved by the time I did the tracert. I had also restarted the router which may explain that.

That looks to have nothing to do with Eircoms network. If you look through the hops you will notice that while the tracert stays on Eircom's network (pos0-0.corea.thn.london.eircom.net), the pings are fine. Once traffic leaves Eircoms routers than it's up to other suppliers to handle it correctly.

I'm getting the exact same problems btw and I'm betting it will fixed in the morning sometime. Large ping spikes like that may just be down to a faulty router in a data centre and it's nothing for you to worry about!

Are eircom not still responsible for the network links it chooses to route the packet over? It would be a bit of a cop out for them to choose some ****ty provider and say that it was outside their network and not their problem.

There was a thread on here last week about problems with the 5th hop out to england , it was in the 250/300 's for a good few here on boards and even the eircom support guy could see it but said there was nothing he could do . One of the guys here found out where it was , enta.net I think , phoned them himself , and hey presto all was well again .

Following morning I rang eircom again and explained this and suggested that it might be a good idea if eircom incorporated this into their support , "no sorry , we can't do that " was the reply .
