i am trying to get my head round all these protocols - i found this somewhere
    Voice Over IP Reference Page

Voice over IP is increasing in importance. Protocols.com has collected various resources that should be of interest to professionals involved with implementing or testing Voice over IP implementations.

    Signaling
    H.323 H.323
    Megaco H.248 Gateway Control Protocol
    MGCP Media Gateway Control Protocol
RVP over IP Remote Voice Protocol Over IP Specification
    SAPv2 Session Announcement Protocol
    SGCP Simple Gateway Control Protocol
    SIP Session Initiation Protocol
Skinny Skinny Client Control Protocol (Cisco)

it seems that sip is the most common one used - what i want to know is - is it the only one i need to be concerned with - and if so what are all the others - and can they call one another for free - and if they cant then isnt it very important to use a protocol that your friends/business partners are using -- or are most of the others used for specialist stuff

    thanks

    Hey Gumboots

I don't know that much about each specific protocol but what I do know is that protocol is just the transport the packets take to get from one ip address to another. H.323 was a protocol brought out to connect different proprietry phone systems together. SIP is its big brother. A standard that almost all ip phones and systems are going to be able to support.

As regards your calling other people that all depends on the proxy servers that does the ip translation. So in theory your SIP phone can ring your MGCP phone but it must go through a server which transcodes it. Blueface use an asterisk server that can translate (AFAIK) all the protocols your mentioned.

This is what I think to be true, however if anything is wrong here, please don't hesitate to point it out

    Regards
