IrelandOffline did a broadband price survey across the OECD in January '05. This was a very useful exercise that got a lot of media attention as it highlighted the poor state of broadband affairs in Ireland. We would like to do this again and we need your help to decipher the product offerings in the various countries.

This time around we will use a particular format to ensure that we get consistent data from all the different countries. We would like to collect the following information:

    - URL: A link to a page that describes the product with price etc.
    - Speed: We're looking to compare 2Mbps products with a download allowance of at least 16GB per month. Pick 2Mbps or higher if 2Mbps is not available.
    - Normal cost: In euro per month ex line rental. Many providers offer special rates the first few months. We would like to know what the normal rate is.
    - Cost Y1 including setup & promos: In euro. You can see from my examples below that we want to see this broken down into the monthly costs and the setup fee, eg 3 x €20 + 9 x €30 + €50 would mean the first three months for €20, the remaining months €30 and a setup of €50.
    - Is router included: This is something like a 4-port router, not a 1-port modem. Indicate "yes" or "no".
    - Voice cost: Monthly cost in euro, 0 if included, n/a if not provided. This typically applies to cable or LLU providers who often charge extra for a voice package. Pick the cheapest package available.
    - Line rental: Monthly cost in euro. This typically applies to ADSL providers. If no line rental applies or if it's included in a bundle, specify 0.
    - Download limit: The download limit, or n/a if unlimited. Has to be at least 16GB per month.

We're looking for information for incumbent telco, ADSL reseller, LLU broadband provider, and cable broadband provider. If possible, provide details for all four. I know it's difficult in many countries to distinguish between resellers and LLU providers, but do your best.

The original thread about the broadband price survey is a very useful starting point as far as getting the names of providers in different countries: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=218154

This link points to an image with the line rental cost in EU countries: http://www.comwreck.com/images/blog_images3/eu_figures6big.gif

I've done Ireland, UK, and Sweden below to give examples of the format that we're looking for.

These are the other OECD countries:

    Australia
    Austria
    Belgium
    Canada
    Czech Republic
    Denmark
    Finland
    France
    Germany
    Greece
    Hungary
    Iceland
    Italy
    Japan
    Korea
    Luxembourg
    Mexico
    Netherlands
    New Zealand
    Norway
    Poland
    Portugal
    Slovak Republic
    Spain
    Switzerland
    Turkey
    United States

    Your help is much appreciated,

    B.

In some ways I think we are playing into Eircoms hands, I think it is disgraceful that Eircom are making their entry level BB 2m. This is just an attempt by Eircom to keep BB prices high. There really should be an always on 512k or 1m product for about €20, like you find in most countries in Europe.

We need this to drive mainstream take up here in Ireland.

Think the normal price is €40 for BT Ireland's DSL service, accroding to the link you provided.

Will add one an entry for Netherlands over the weekend.

I would question your methodology as it lets eircom away with murder.

The cost of Y1 broadband from BT is 590 in the figures you are using which is more expensive than eircom at 518.19.

The reality is that in order to get eircom BB it is going to cost me an extra 24 x 12 for line rental or 288. So BT BB will cost me 590 over 12 months whereas getting eircom BB will cost me 806 for 12 months. Or another way of calculating will be that eircom costs 518.19 just for BB while BT BB will cost me just (580-288)=292 just for BB

The way that the figures are going is that eircom will get away with charging the highest line rental in Europe but come out with a better price than BT

One of the things we can do with this data when blaster99 has it compiled is come up with a TCO figure for BB in Ireland

e.g. BTIreland x per month for Bb plus line rent = yy.yy
    Smart x per month = zz.zz
    Digiweb x per month wireless = aa.aa
Digiweb x per month dsl plus line rent = bb.bb

    etc etc

Do similar for three countries in Europe and you can compare how much it will cost to get BB per annum in total

After all does anyone really care if you can get BB from x for 500 per annum inc line rent versus 500 per annum from y inc line rent?

Whether x is charging cheap BB and full whack on line rent or y is charging full for BB but subsidising the line rent its really irrelevant.

Total Cost of Ownership TCO but for BB so we'll call it Total Cost of Broadband TCBB (c)

Yeah, the annual cost as indicated in the tables is not the final story. I just want to see what the broadband costs in a year to use in the final calculations. The total cost of ownership will take BB, line rental, voice, and router cost into consideration.

It's basically very complicated to do a fair comparison as different services bundle different products and charge for some things that are free in other markets, so I've decided to take all of the above into consideration to make it fair and square. It unfortunately creates more work for the people collecting the data, but it's the only way I'm afraid.

BTW when yuo say router, do you mean a wireless router or just a modem?

All the UPC products I listed abouve don't have a router, but most do come with a free modem.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭Blaster99

I mean a router, not a modem. It doesn't have to be wireless.

Sorry to nit pick here, so something with a 4 port switch at least?

You see nearly all BB "modems" are actually routers, but they only have one ethernet port. Just trying to clarify it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭Blaster99

Yeah let's assume a 4-port router. I think I indicated that in the thread starter incidently.

Modem implies something that doesn't have a firewall, doesn't support NAT, etc.

My experiemce is that most if not all adsl connections they supply a Router (with Firewall), often now with wireless.

With most Wireless and Cable broadband you get a Modem with no router/firewall.

    Non-router Modems
Some are Ethernet or USB and some both. IBB seem to be able to supply a ripwave box with a single port, ant if faulty you might get an Ethernet when you had USB or vice versa. Which is NOT easy for average person to cope with as some older PCs (NT4.0) don't support USB and some cheap home PCs in past and many laptops more recently don't have Ethernet as standard.

The DOCSIS cable boxes standard with NTL and Digiweb Metro have no Router/NAT/Firewall. Also the IBB Ripwave boxes have none.

    and others no problems
    Mine works ok

Get the 4 month package give a false name and false bank details and repeat every four months and save getting locked into the 1 year 1 megabyte package through direct debit you cant exit if service is bad
just return the old equipment to the IBB every four months
as its a kinda loan system for equipment I think

I thought when I lived and worked in Spain that was the tops but no

At the end of the day the TELCO are sharks big bad evil sharks with lots of hidden extra bombs waiting for victims to find
I know I work on the fringes of this corrupt industry and never in my varied working life have I seen such a sysamatic and total abuse of costomers by an industry such as TELCO 's and every day I pray that I can find a better job to get away from all these banditos

Just did a quick review of the current costs here in Spain - there are a large range of suppliers so this is a sample of whats on offer. All prices include 16% VAT. ISPs are pushing ADSL2+ now so 2MB prices aren't improving.

The incumbent Telefonica offers products at really inflated prices - only for suckers who are too lazy to shop around. To use most ADSL services you keep renting the line from Telefonica however Jazztel now offer their own line at a discount for 20MB customers.

Jazztel's 20MB ADSL with national calls and line rental at €612 for the year is about the best on offer at the moment.
