Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Another one of these post your... threads.

Like the title says, what's the quickest thing you've driven by whatever metric you choose to use.

In my case, probably an MR-2 Mk.II turbo, which should hit 60 in under 5.5 seconds. After that, an S2000 and then a BMW 530D.

    VW Passat Estate - Diesel.

I got it up to 40mph with the handbrake on before my Dad shouted at me to pull over.

That was the end of my one and only driving lesson.

I think I'll stick to the motorbike :)

Fastest I ever drove myself was 150MPH (indicated) in a Sierra Cosworth, been in an SL55 AMG flat out at a definite 155MPH !

Also had an E36 M3 flat out in top gear !

  • Registered Users Posts: 688 ✭✭✭merlinsmerryman

02 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, a 05 Lancer EVOIX, and have been driven in an F430 and a Bentley Continental GT at about 165mph, great fun:D

Fastest I've driven was flat out at 150mph indicated in a 944 Turbo (on a track).

(The fastest I've been driven was also 150mph, on the M1 near Dundalk, in a 78 AM Vantage. Never again - the smell of burning clutch is still in my nose).

Fastest (top speed) I've been driven was 155mph in a '04 Jag XK8 (? the coupe monster one), I was in the passenger seat with my nails dug into the dash.
Quickest.. one of three turbo'd MX5's I've driven, not sure which one is faster. Short gearing + all are in and around 10lbs/tonne (for frame of reference, an Elise is between 14 and 12.9lbs/tonne depending on who you ask : http://www.sandsmuseum.com/cars/elise/thecar/performance/historicalperformance.html )

Fastest car I've driven would be a 05 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, wasn't going quick at all. Fastest I've driven would be about 60mph in a 05 Golf GTI. I'm 16

Suzuki Hayabusa - 170 mph - not saying where :D

Well the fastest road car I've driven is a Civic Type-R. Its rated top speed is 146mph but never done that sort of speed in it. Also driven an Accord Type-S but still think the CTR was faster. The CTR was 0-60 in 6.6s and the Accord was 7.9s

Fastest, I've ever driven is 122mph in a Ford Focus 1.6 Estate on the German Autobahn. :)

Funniest high speed driving was 106mph in a 1994 1.1 litre Fiesta while in France. It took about 6 miles of flooring it out to go from 98 mph to the final 106mph and the wing mirrors, steering wheel, rear-view mirror shaking like mad. It was like a scene from Star Trek and I was waiting to hear "She's gonna blow!" :D

Getting a new Golf GTI in Jan,they're supposed to be lively enough,146 mph claimed

Arent Autobahns great? My mate and i once got 104/ 105 ish out of a '78 transit diesel in germany after going flat out for about 10 minutes scary as hell because thise things have practically no steering beyond 60mph. a bit like that fiesta incident except in our case , a coolant pipe exploded and we had to pull off into a small village. it took a quarter of an hour for steam to stop coming out and the diff was actually glowing red at the back. Fun while it lasted all the same. Fastest road legal cars ever driven would be, sierra cosworth, A jag xjs v12 and a bmw m5, sadly none of them mine. :(

Fastest I've ever gone so far is 178 ( not in Ireland, needless to say) and before any one butts in my M5 doesn't have a limiter, the previous owner ordered it like that. I've been told it will do 196 but I need to find a good enough road and I'd say I'll have to go back to Germany for that.Riviting stuff though.:D

    Escort cosworth @ 400bhp

    Porshe Boxter S

And a Renault 5 Turbo (with adjustable turbo set to 1,500 revs - absolutely impossible to drive but really good fun once you got moving :D)

I've been in a Lotus Esprit 100mph, a Black Ferrari (80mph) and best of all, the quickest type of Porshe 911 at a cool 150mph. All of this took place in the UK and I wasn't driving.

Yep definitely Germany for that Junkyard ;) I was in a taxi in Dusseldorf last year, crazy driver was doing around 220k
while on the phone and checking his sat nav, this wasn't even on the autobahn. :p
Fastest car I have driven is pretty mild in comparison, my humble 1957 beetle- 15 second standing quarters (around 7ish 0-100).

Ah fastest I've driven.. volkswagen caddy tdi at 118!! Fastest car though was a mkII golf gti with lots of engine upgrades and original exterior. Sadly somebody bought before me:(

Fastest car, my friends E46 M3 - never been speeding in it with him. In fact I don't think I've ever been in a car over 100MPH

After that, a tuned 04 WRX STi - crazy acceleration

    Fastest I've ever driven:

90 km/h around a bend in a Renault 4 van. Actually lifted one rear wheel. (Stupid bet (I was a lot younger then) with a golf GTI driver, who said I wouldn't dare ... he wouldn't do more than 85 through that particular bend either:D ) ...never again:eek:

    Fastest car I ever drove:

Merc S 600 (rental) ...rented a Golf and got "upgraded" to that:D ...because I happened to be going where the car needed to be the next day. It appears that i look trustworthy enough. Couldn't really "drive" it though ...traffic all the way:mad:

    Fastest I've ever been driven:

200 km/h in some manager-types E-Class ...on the Autobahn, in lashing rain, no visibility and about two car lengths distance to the car in front ...

...asked to be let off at the next train station

Fastest car i've ever driven would be a Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC.

Fastest i've ever actually driven would be 120mph in my first learner car, a 1991 Opel Kadett Expression.

The fastest car I ever drove was a 911 Carrera 4. The car I enjoyed driving fast in most was a Messerschmitt K175. "Fast" in this was about 40mph.

    Driven:Scooby sti(faster):) :)
Driven:Import Nissan Micra turbo(with a supercharger added on for good measure) Don't ask me how it was done, maybe the turbo lag pissed someone off.I always thought it was one or the other. Mad japs.(although VW have come up with the same thing and call it Twincharger)(stupid fast)
Driven: NME Nissan Micra works rally car in forestry spec(around Dublin City centre roads, although not road legal)(sound track was more appealing then the speed):D :D

Used to have nice cars in the past but at the moment I've a s*** car. But my mates have nice ones. Fools let me drive. BoxsterS or (old but quick) 964 (911). Not really into speed, I don't think we have the roads or discipline for it in Ireland. I prefer to lope along at a crusinig speed or go off the main roads into the twisties. Not quick but more fun. I find long straight roads serious boring. I have a problem with people who do insane speeds or generally drive dangerously.

Never driven fast in Ireland. But when away on holdiays I've wound up the odd car. Used to have a old Golf GTI which I got to 115mph. In the Boxster (I wasn't driving) we hit 130/135 with the roof down. A Ford people carrier and an old Accord taxi passed us out doing about 140+. At which point I nearly lost the map. So we came back to a speed we're we could chat. But no matter what you drive theres always someone whos faster, or prepared to drive faster. So you should always drive at a speed that you are most comfortable, and within your own, and your cars abilities.

Once you driven some decent cars you really realise the huge difference in braking ability and directional stability at speed in a car designed for speed and one that isn't.

Please post where and how you get to drive the top end cars, Ferrari's etc. Love to know how people get to run these things.

Never actually owned a proper fast car :(

Been driven at an indicated 160mph in a Porsche 911. What impressed me most about that car was how effortlessly and quickly it got back down to legal speeds once we'd overtaken a dozen or so cars.

    Driven:
    Ford Capri 2.8 Special
    TVR 3000S
    Audi A8 4.2
    Corolla 16v Twin Cam

Out of them all the Corolla felt fastest. When you put the foot down the torque steer was ridiculous, you had to fight it all the way. Practically undrivable but good crack for a short while.

For a proper sense of speed, though, four wheels is too many! My old TZR125 felt faster than any car I've ever been in!

The Fastest car I have ever driven would be a F40, but I only drove it about 400yards in an underground car park @ 30/40mph. I was too scared to change it up from 2nd..... such a waste. Very wierd inside, all plastic and crappy looking.

Ive driven a roll royce at about 150mph+ in Germany. Its very scary when you think your doing about 90mph and you notice the corners ahead coming at you much faster than they should........, trying to stop nearly 2 tons of car at that speed is not nice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

Yeah, stopping is worth considering too. You have a better chance stopping a Rolls with an anchor than with their brakes, they're unbelievable for such a heavy car.

WRC Ford Escort and WRC Subaru Impreza, only drove them myself at about 50mph, but I was a passenger in both at top speed about 120mph during pre-rally testing on some very tight mountain roads on several occasions, better than any rollercoaster in the world.

Was part of a rally team, my father was the main mechanic and I used to download info the car's computer onto my laptop, used to use it to monitor the turbo boost so you'd have an idea if it was going to fail.

They accelerate very smoothly and build up speed like no other car Ive driven, no sense of speed. Its basically silent too. Under heavy braking they pitch forward like a boat though, it was pretty scary as it was being delivered to my cousin's customer in Germany.

    Sean.

@ irish1, Getting a spin in a WRC car is very high on my list of things to do before I die. you lucky bástard.

Used to do some delivery driving for a few garages back when the Tiger was still alive and kicking, so have a bit of a shopping list.
08 CL 500 power, nice, got up to about 110 mph or so,
    07 Maserati Quattroporte, 4.2, what a sound, about 100.
96 Porsche 993 cabrio, nice but would drive you crazy after a day or two,
01 Boxster S, lovely car brilliant balance and plenty of power, 90 mph,
    08 911 c4s, couldn't give it a lash had a co pilot.
07 Aston Martin DB9 Volante, drove the length of the m50 bumper to bumper, not fair, only got about 1/2 a mile rip at the end.
07 Jaguar XK 4.2 V8 Coupe, liked this, Dublin airport to Dundrum 4am 20 mins
07 Range Rover Sport 4.2 Supercharged crazy in a straight line but you can see the petrol gauge going down as the speedo goes up, 105 mph en route to Wexford.
04 X5 Sport, rock solid at 220 kph felt like 100 kph love these things.
08 X5 Twin Turbo, didn't get too fast but some power overtaking.
    06 m6 only about 500 yards
08 M3 not my cup of tea.
    06 r32 :) Fun 90 mph (roundabouts about 60).
