Why not try jsf (java server faces) I haven't used them before but i was looking into them the other day, and they seemed interesting and if you use something like myeclipse, it'll easy enough to develop a cool application.

whatever you do you should uses a new scripting language such as ruby ,ajax or java spring. It'll get you extra attention if you go out of your way to self-learn.

How about one of those 'live web chat with customer service' apps that are so popular these days?
Or a decent search engine for porn.

If you know Java you should try and do something with Java3d

You can make something visually attractive but also complex - quite easy.

I worked a bit with searched document visualisation through Java 3d and got good feedback. Whats your degree?

You could always make an IM application but put a twist on it that no one else has done yet - maybe elaborate on MSN's drawing function.

If you want to explore any ideas let me know cause ive done a scatter of interesting mini projects like these

try looking into JOGL (java openGL) been looking at it myself. should be able to make something really cool in it with the added factor that you went out and learnt something new.

If it's a web app, learn Ruby on Rails, and leave the other teams in the dust with implemented functionality. If you're a good coder, you should be able to pick it up quite quickly (give me a PM and I'll send you the URLs of some tutorials).

Most fun I've ever had programming.

Jumping the gun a bit, but I love this language and framework.

If it's either a web app or a website you need to build, can you describe what you've been asked to do for the project; it's not very clear yet.
