I love Christmas but I absolutely detest Christmas songs. The same rubbish every year. Fairytale is so over-played.

Would have to say "Fairytale of New York" as my fav but then I like Let it Snow by Frank Sinatra, actually I pretty much like anything by Frank Sinatra

Some of them would be good if they weren't played to death for over a month before the big day. Everywhere you go it's just the same cd on repeat. Awfull. It would be better if they were mixed in with other stuff and not played 52 times a day (figures based on experience of working in a popular chain of stores a few years back).

I always loved Fairytale of NY but it must be by the Pogues and Kirsty McColl. Not the christy moore version.
I worked in an Irish bar in Toronto for a year and they used to play it at least once a day. It ruined it for a while but now it's my favourite again.

Thats my fave too, last year it got loads of air play, this year its not getting nearly enough.
Whenever it comes on I do me bestest Mariah Carey impression, which usually results in my howling out the words, whilst trying to look sexy, ha ha ha, great fun though.

    I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
    I don't care about presents
    Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
    Make my wish come true...
    All I want for Christmas
    Is yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooou...
    :D:p:D:p:D

FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK!!!!!!!!!!!! Even during the summer it's my fave song!

    It was christmas eve babe
    In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won’t see another one
And then he sang a song
    The rare old mountain dew
    I turned my face away
    And dreamed about you

    Got on a lucky one
    Came in eighteen to one
    I’ve got a feeling
This year’s for me and you
    So happy christmas
    I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They’ve got cars big as bars
    They’ve got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It’s no place for the old
When you first took my hand
    On a cold christmas eve
    You promised me
    Broadway was waiting for me

    You were handsome
    You were pretty
    Queen of new york city
    When the band finished playing
    They howled out for more
    Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
    We kissed on a corner
    Then danced through the night

The boys of the nypd choir
    Were singing galway bay
And the bells were ringing out
    For christmas day

    You’re a bum
    You’re a punk
You’re an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
    You scumbag, you maggot
    You cheap lousy ****
    Happy christmas your arse
I pray God it’s our last

    I could have been someone
    Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
    When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
    Can’t make it all alone
I’ve built my dreams around you

    OOOOOOHHHHH yyeeeaahhh!!

I'll second that not that I find Christmas depressing but that Driving home for Christmas is my favourite...

It's gotta be an oldie, you can't beat Nat King Cole for nostalgia and ambience. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, lovely tune.

I like Christmas songs, but I know what you mean about being the "same songs.." Whenever a new artist records a Christmas album, you're guaranteed to find songs like "Chestnuts Roasting..." and "Silent Night".. it's like... geez... there are lovely songwriters... they should write more songs!

But to answer the question, I like "This Christmas" (Christina Aguilera's version), "Merry Christmas Everybody" (by Steps) and "When Love Came Down" (Point of Grace).

Am I missing out on the sarcasm, or have you been avoiding anything that emits noise every christmas for the few years? :p

Fairytale of Newyork by the Pogues and Kirsty McColl does it for me every time - my brother knew that it is one of my all time favorite songs and played it for me when he was a guest DJ on a college radio at one time (even though it was the middle of summer).

Caravan of Love - The Housemartins - not sure if this is technically a Christmas song but it does remind me of Christmas.

The Power of Love - Frankie goes to Hollywood - another classic.

Stop the Cavalry - Jona Lewie need I say more.

Stan - Eminem, well it was no 1 over Christmas one year...

My fave christmas song always has been Shakin Stevens-Merry Christmas Everyone! Puts me in such a good mood when i hear it, cant wait to go home to hear it now :D

    1) Fairytale of new york. Best xmas song ever. It's the law, you know.

    2) Sleighride, by the Ronettes

    3) Baby come home for christmas - U2

I could quite happily live the rest of my days without ever hearing that McCartney one, the Chris Rea one or any of the Cliff Richard ones...

You are seriously missing out. One of the best songs ever, Christmas or not.

There's a sample of it here
but I recommend going out to any shop over the next couple of weeks and stand around for ten minutes, you're bound to hear it at least twice.

lucky you imo. the song is severely over rated.

Boney M - Marys Boy Child is another good one

I like Happy Birthday, I hear Warner own the rights now.

That's a fact... and it makes for interesting reading.

John Lennon's "Merry Christmas/War Is Over" is good but definitely goes on a bit too long at the end. Fairytale of New York is a classic that has been done to death (overplayed) on the radio, etc.

Here's a spanner in the works that nobody has mentioned... last year's (I think...) surprise hit...

The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)

    Great song!
