we currentyl have eircom landline + eircom broadband. If we were to change to smart, do we need to pay for the eircom landline if we don't need landline number? Does that "free line rental" mean just that? How long it usually takes to get smart bb, and if we have eircom before, are there any problems? Like not having broadband for week, which is unacceptable :)

the 35 euros covers the cost of your landline rental and your broadband. In effect you are getting bb for 10 euros a month.

From reading other posts here it looks as if Eircom cancel your bb immediately you contact them. Smart need an eircom account number and a cessation number (given to you by Eircom) before they can initiate the process - when things are good the average period without bb seems to be about 10 days howevere there is another recent post here which states that the poster will not be getting connected to Smart until early January.

Why not contact Smart and ask them what the switchover period is at the moment?

Can I just disconnect the phone number (what do you do with landline when you have mobile) or is it mandatory to have one with broadband in Ireland?

You need a phone number for Smart BB. If you don't mind changing your current one there should be no problems.
