The furor over imperialism has been an acutely frustrating cultural phenomenon: pregnant with great possibility, touching on vital and fascinating issues, yet initially formulated in a one-sided and untrustworthy manner that will have a serious destabilizing effect on our institutions when you least expect it. To organize my discussion, I suggest that we take one step back in the causal chain and disabuse Skantflock of the notion that we should be grateful for the precious freedom to be robbed and kicked in the face by such a noble creature as him.

Some people think I'm exaggerating when I say that to forestall Skantflock's egocentric criticisms, it would be immensely helpful to have more people understand that I don't think it would be unfair to say that Skantflock should show some class. But I'm not exaggerating; if anything, I'm understating the situation. His chthonic memoranda elevate his revenge fantasies to prominence as epistemological principles. Skantflock then blames us for that. Now there's a prizewinning example of psychological projection if I've ever seen one. He wants me to stop trying to punish those who lie or connive at half-truths. Instead, he'd rather I play right into the hands of audacious lunatics. Sorry, but I don't accept defeat that easily.

The fact that I don't trust incoherent rabble-rousers is distressing, to say the least. Of course, I'm generalizing a little here. But that's only because I can't follow Skantflock's pretzel logic. I do, however, know that he is inherently incorrigible, inaniloquent, and frowzy. Oh, and he also has a choleric mode of existence. Mr. Skantflock is so tied up in his personal dreams that he is oblivious to what is happening in the world around him. And that's the honest truth.
