If only there were maps or a DIT website .. and a dictionary or spellcheck.. man, the world would be a better place.

.. go to an open day or something.

    ahh don't mind them.

i'm in first year in DIT kevin street doing Computer Science. i'll try to answer any questions you have.

    1. DIT, i find is great, it's in the city centre (not so much as trinity but only 15 minute walk away). there are plenty of shops/bars/amenities around the college.

    2. computer science takes part in kevin street and Aungier street, don't worry they are both near each other (2 minute or less walk). Aungier street is the nicer of the two colleges as it's the most recent.

don't be afraid to ask anymore questions this place is as dead as a dodo.

I've heard it's a decent enough college, wouldn't say it's any good as a 'cologe' though.

where would be the best place to go for cologe life and for the actual course itself

i love DIT, im in 1st yr mathematical science in kevin st. i love it, its a great college, great atmosphere. i might come accross over enthusiastic, but i was in UCD last year and hated it so much.

Asbolutely nowhere in the world, because 'Cologe' doesn't exist. If you change your mind and decide you want to go to 'College', go to Waterford I.T., good courses, good atmosphere.

at least you have your priorities right.

    The net soc is excellent

i reckon atmosphere is a bad word. i mean computer science is a subject involving alot of staying in a computer lab programming, and any room with twenty people going for hours at the same thing is going to have 'atmosphere'.

it will vary from year to year also, cause atmosphere is generally enhanced by the people who are in ur class, but it seems the dit su and all the societies (ahem.... go DIT netsoc!!!!) are getting their acts together.

this year is shaping up nicely imo.

never been to wit, heard it was good, altho i dont know anyone doing comp sci there.

but to be honest, i dont know anyone who is/would live in waterford. nothing against there, i just dont know anyone:rolleyes:

Go to D.I.T, you wont regret it. It's a great laugh. The lecturers promise you riches and fine jewls upon graduation.

id recommend dit myself too, in third year of computer science course (dt228) and i like it... theres always a few complaints as with any college/course but that cant be helped, overall i find it good
word of warning: 2nd year is where the bulk of the work is done in my course (so far anyway), 1st year is a walk in the park

yeah, first year is breezing by. im waiting for the wave to hit me in second.

kevin st is cool... i suppose.

second years biggest issue is the uselessness of some of the subjects like marketing/accounting/"introduction" to databases (you wont get close to SQL, or even access)

they should allow for electives in 2nd year CS, to choose the likes of algorithms and microprocessors at you're own will

    god, what an awful subject.
i was in colaiste ide a few years ago, and for comms, part of our marks was to show the lecturer that we were able to send a text message! seriously

What is management like? I presume it's another buisness subject?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

yeah. the theory of selling crap to people, basically. it's a doozey ;)

as a science student, an immediate loathing of management is customary

I was told by a guy that works in HR in a top IT company that the DIT Comp Science course and the DCU Comp Applications course produce the best graduates in the country. He said that UCD or TCD students could blather on for hours about all the theory but put them in front of a PC and ask them to write a program and they haven't a fúckin clue (his words not mine).

Jaysus, must have changed since I was in it. In just one semester we had to learn SQL and build a relatively complex database as an assignment.

Maybe that was third year? When you DB for real?

Ahhhh there was a bit of SQL in second year Comp Science. Like a crazy assed teaser it came up and wiggled it's "I can make you rich" booty before being quickly and quietly being escorted off the premises by Snackery Cop.

The feel I have so far from the course is that the year's go like this:

    1 - DRINK!
    2 - WORK!
    3 - DRINK/WORK!
    4 - DRINK/WORK/CRY!

Biggest joke of a subject so far in the time I've being doing it? Management aka Raciam Studies or as the lecturer put it in my time

"Germans: great at making cars, no social lives. Chinese: join a trade union get front row seats to a Red Square execution. Irish: Useless, drink far too much. SILENCE ETHNIC MINORITIES, I HATE IBM!!!!"

It was round about this point (lecture 2 I think) that I decided to stop going to Management.

To get to some sort of point though, DIT is pretty good, most of the lecturers are OK but don't expect the wonder of the ages from this college. More often than not the only way to describe a situation in DIT is "F**KING FARCE".

Wouldn't change places for the world mind...

I dont understand the problem that people have with second year....

I'm having such a good time, i'll probably do it again! lol!

And as a thing... MIT (Massachusettes I.T) is the ranked nummber one in the world for engineering degrees, computer included. If im not mistaken one of the heads the department is a DIT graduate...

Also, i heard recently that an survey was done with companies in Europe asking about different degrees, qualifications they looked for in a graduate, etc. Now i dont know how true this is but apparently DIT's computer science degree came number 2 in Europe, bettered only by the computer science department in the University of Zurich. As i was told one of the reasons for the course to score so high was because, not only by the standard of the course itself, but the work placement in third year and the focus towards preparing us for a job rather than just trying to teach a subject.
It seems like we are very "employable" people!

But if that isn't concrete enough, i know of alot of successful people that have graduated from the degree to work for multi-national companies such as google.

rant, rant, rant, rant, ......................... :p:D
