Ever-so-slightly off topic, but anyone remember the Audi 'procon ten' system of the 80s? Apart from it being mentioned in their ads at the time, never really heard much more about it or its effectiveness.

Regading Renaults, I like the plastic wings on the Megane which can be pushed right in and still retain their shape. However when they do get broken the shards and sharp edges are like knives.
AFAIK Procon Ten wasn't marketed very well by Audi and it never caught on. So everyone else went down the airbag route and after a while Audi followed suit. Procon Ten was probably harder for Joe Public to understand and visualise. Also there were reports of Audis needing expensive repairs after low speed crashes due to the Procon Ten starting to work.

As for the Renault wings, from what I see they tear off and break very easily in low speed crashes. This may be one reason why Renaults are seen as weak. OTOH as you say they sustain no damage in parking knocks that would dent a metal wing.

In any case the plastic wings play litttle or no part in the absorption of a major impact, it's the metal structures underneath (inner wings and chassis rails etc.) that do this.

Anyone remember the crash test on top gear where a human tester drove a Megane II into the side of a Mondeo at 30 mph. The Megane was barely damaged and could probably have driven away. Whereas the Mondeo bent like a banana. This was not surprising due to a) it being a side impact, the Megane would have sustained a lot of damage if side impacted by the Mondeo b) the Mondeo being a 1993 design.

It would have been interesting if they had done a head on impact with a human tester driving the Megane....I'd say he still would have walked away.

I still wouldn't buy a Renault, having seen car accidents first hand the evidence speaks for itself. I also think the 30 mph is unrealistic and the angle of impact. But personally I like a stronger car, thats my basic point but I also stick to what I've said in previous posts. I believe what I see and the day I see other wise I'll let you know.:)
Its a good job Renaults are so safe.....they need to be.www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=57&t=172863

Junkyard I hope you were watching the feature on road safety on the Late Late last night. If not its repeated on monday night. They showed a Renault 25 rear ending a Ford Orion at IIRC 50 mph. The passenger compartment of the Ford folded up like tinfoil and anyone in the back seats would have been killed. Anyone in the front seats would have been killed or seriously injured. The R25 was badly damaged but the passenger area was intact and anyone inside would have lived. Does this mean that Fords are deathtraps? No. There are a number of factors which need to be considered when evaluating this crash. I haven't time to explain them.

PS in case any smartarse decides to point out that Renault sponsor the Late Late and that therefore they must have rigged the test. The test was not carried out by the Late Late, I believe it was one of the Fifth Gear crashes. It was merely a coincidence that there was a Renault used.

What kind of wreck do you want? If you mean Irish wrecks, I'm only warming up untill we get some ice (pardon the pun):)Don't get me wrong I've crashed myself a few times.

Yes Squirrel it is, there were some more pictures on wrecked exotics but they don't seem to be there at the moment.

I think he was trying to be funny on the mis-spelling of wreck, bit of a tosser to me. I did have pics of our old Micra which rear ended someone a few years ago, don't know where they are now though. Not really fancy or anything

To be honest Squirrel most of the Irish stuff won't be anything spectacular when you consider what cars are on the road here anyway. When it comes to spelling, "Let he without sin cast the first stone". I already made my excuses, if you want it hand written PM me your fax number and I'll send it on to you Litcagral.:p

I've no problem with mis-spelling once everything is readable, or close enough. My spelling's not perfect. I suppose Litcagral thought it was funny. How about we don't go near hand-writing, mine's so bad it's unreal.

We don't really have the calibre of cars here I'd definately agree with you. But this is just crazy, my dad has one of these

It just proves it was in the right place...

Just shows you that at high speed, or if your hit in the wrong place, you're screwed.

The first 3P I had was one just like this - white with the black stripes - looked stunning.

Was driving it to Cork one wet day and came into this what I thought was a 90 degree right hander - except it was a hairpin.
Of course not being a very experienced driver at the time I slapped on the brakes and the fronts locked and it was heading for a stone wall with a 30 feet drop onto a railway line below.
In an amazing bit of fright insipred skill I yanked on the handbrake and got it sideways before impact.
The left front struck the wall first which whipped the rear left corner around for another little slap.:o

I believe the car would have gone through the wall if I had not 'recovered' the situation - but still my beautiful 3P was in S.H. I. T and it was a huge set back to my ambitions in F1.

The M3 on page 2 was wrecked by a jealous husband, you'd think the f***ing idiot who owned the M3 would have taken care of the car as it wasn't the first car to get wrecked under similar circumstances.

Theres a great photo on that crashed exotics site of a brand new burnt out Lambo. I can't find it for the life of me.

Aparently the dealer forgot to tell the proud owner that the brakes shouldn't be pushed too hard for the first few weeks and they caught fire..

As far as I'm concerned Renaults are not a strong car, you don't have to take my word for it ask any panel beater.

Sorry to drag this back up, I am only catching up with this thread.

    Anyway,
Isn't the condition of the car irrelevant?
It is the condition of the occupants that matter.

Shhhhh... don't mention the R word!:D I know its all about surviving the crash but I don't fancy getting showered by metal and plastic either and the fact that the slightest tip and the thing disintegrates.

The driver lost it at over 120 MPH on the Northbound lanes of the 101, hit a pole at the left front and this was the result. He was injured and the owner (passenger) was OK.
