Hey was playing on GFF last night and was seeing something really strange happening which was driving me crazy. My ping would start at about 50 and stay this low for about 5 mins then it would slowly start to rise higher and higher leading me to be booted. At one point it reached 2500 thats two and a half seconds!!!!!!

I thought maybe it was the GFF server so in the command line i pinged google.ie and a few other sites and my ping was generally just bad.

I also tried it on americas army and it was unplayable also. ping statred at about 20 and went to over 250.

Does anyone know were digiweb or eircom having problems last night or is there anyway I can fix this. I got broadband in to play on line games and now I cant even do that. I punched the crap outa my CRT monitor last night every time this happened. Could really use some help here, for the sake of my bruised fist and monitor!! :(

    Who is your ISP?

digiweb who might as well be eircom as I think they purchase the service from eircom and then just sell it as their own. But yes the answer is digiweb

I have digiweb but on metro and it has been great since I changed from UTV which is a f**king joke. Didnt hear of any problems last night from anyone I know. Maybe try a tracert to see where your connection was f**ked

How do I do that? i'm pretty computer retarded

Yeah never had any problems with digiweb until last night. First time i've had problems but they're pretty bad as I cant play for more than 5 mins without getting booted

Click 'start' 'run' then in the box type 'cmd' , this opens the dos box .

type 'tracert clarity.jolt.co.uk' ( replace with any IP or url )

when it finishes click the little 'c:\' in the top right hand corner of that dos box and from the drop down menu click 'edit' 'select all' and press 'enter' . Then come back here and 'paste' your results .

There seems to have been general BB problems both sides of the border in the last few days, across providers. A lot of players have been experiencing ping spikes. I wouldnt worry unless its everyday.

If it was the first time it happened I wouldn't worry too much about it (Unless it becomes frequent of course)

Someone could have been working on the line, I know they had a post on the Eircom site about area's they currrently working where they said it might cause trouble for user's in said area's.

    Hopefully it will fix itself.

My ping times sorted themselves out yesterday evening, I wish I knew why I was getting them on wednesday night as maybe there's something I could do to prevent them in the future but for now on with the killing (unfortunately its usually the killing of me)

Maybe your provider was acting up m8?
Last week i was having issues with my eircom broadband,i posted on the nett comms/broadband forum to see if anyone alse had issues and within 5 mins guys replied with same issue so panic over.
Always worth putting a thread over there if your having issues to rule out your machine etc.
Often connection issues can be widespread.

Do a tracert everytime you have this problem. Then you will find out where the problem is

I do share the house with 2 other guys using the broadband, if they were downloading stuff would that also make my ping times rise

I did that tracert thing last night a few times and it looked fine, I pinged a few of the servers I play on also and it was fine.

When I ping -t digiweb.ie I get alot of returns in the 30ms range but about 1 in 5 returns will be 300ms. I get 0% packet loss.

My guess its that my 2 buddies are downloading stuff and hogging bandwidth

Yes if its your BB cap theirs and only give them enough BB to browse, if they are uploading whilke you playing ...well you cant play simple as that.
For bf2 you need 8kb up and 14kb down to play without lag.

Cheers cos last night it was really annoying I am like 80 points away from my second promotion and first weapon unlock so I was fuming when I couldn't play anymore.

its not "my" BB but the lads are sound so i'd say I could convince them not to download crap when I'm playing. This might solve my mystery

It would be more uploading assumiing you download @120kb you only need 14 of that for Bf2 (bare minimum obviously more is better) its the upload that will kill your gaming.

Delete the MBR of their Hds will keep off it for a while :D

Yeah downloading the porn does kill your BF games. Even with Metro one of the guys(4 PC's connected to wireless LAN) was download a small file to update drivers and my ping went from 50 on GFF server to around 250 and I was kicked. Waited till he was finished and then tried again. Back to 50 again.

Tell them to stop downloading the porn and watch some porn vids:D

Cheers lads, well one of my mates has 19 dvds. Some of them are 8hrs long. The most i'd need is a 3 minute dvd :D

I was seing the exact same thing Big Nelly, ping going from around 50 to 250-300 and didn't know why, until last night I asked were they downloading anything

I'll have a word with them so thanks guys

Thanks syxpak, I did some telecoms modules in coll so not a newb when it comes to the above terms. I even have a paper published on 802.16a/e but thanks for the push in the right direction. I am how ever computer retarded, didn't have a clue about tracert thingy and the likes.

Your housemates are downloading (assuing) using P2P while you're gaming, yes?

Either stop them or enable QoS - maybe even go so far as to ask your ISP for advice as to what implementation of QoS/traffic shaping to use.
Getting them to simply rate-limit their downloads won't be that effective, you'll still get ping spikes and jerky play.

Good man on getting published without knowing about tracert smile.gif

I aint sure if its point to point or point to multipoint, not 100% on 802.11g but think it could be multipoint but either way yeah they are downloading while I'm playing and I gots to fix it.

Yeah the paper thing was a college project (between 4 of us) which was put forward by our lecturer and it got published.
