    Is 49Dn Revolutionary Gear cut to suit Umaga - Maori ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,090 ✭✭✭RadioRetro

    13a - Deal - Ushered (lead) around about.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12 drumdoc

    Maori is correct. Revolutionary is Mao and gear cut is rig without the g

    f.t.a.o. Blinky - no easy rules. Sometimes the answer just fits and I have to go back and work out what the clue meant! The French = Le/La The Spanish = El The German = Der etc seems to crop up quite a bit every year. Eastern = E Northern = N.

    Thanks Drumdoc, I need your brains. Think 108Dn is The Rams if you are still looking for it. Looking for 91Dn Venal Soul converted by Peter the Great.

    Used to do it a lot in the 1990s but don't seem to have time now. Off the top of my head:

    Priest=PP Fr Rev
    Doctor=Dr MO
    Boy/Lad=Son/Ted (ie word ends in 'ted')
    kkkkkkkkkk=Ten Weeks ( 10 wee 'k's)
    Russell=AE
    GEGS=Scrambled eggs
    HIJKLMNO=Water ( ie H to O)
    The French=Le La
    Ulster=NI
    Conservative=Tory ( word usually ends in 'tory')
    Academician=RA (Royal Academy)

    and loads more in similar fashion.

    Kite Flyer (4)

    I think the 3rd is W, so thought the answer might be HAWK.
    Not 100% though, any better ideas ?

    O'Sullevan is Peter the Great (BBC horse-racing commentator)

    Hi ,
    I`ve finished it , I think........Just need clarification on a couple or three!!

    42a R--n
    98a Ebor
    83d Effin

    I can only connect these answers to part of the clue , I`d feel much happier if I understood it entirely.

    Can anyone help ?? I`ll trade for whatever you might be stuck with.

    Cheers.

    42a is Roan - it's a colour of horse and it's Roman without the "M" (city dweller invested millions)

    83d is right - "Ein" is "a" in German and very loud is "ff" - fortissimo. Effin is some god-forsaken parish in Limerick.

    98a - I hadn't got this one but your answer is probably more plausible than my tentative suggestion, which was "exer" - Ex Eastern Racketeer.

    For my part, I'm all done apart from the following:

    6a - which may be hawk
    7d - which may be win
    58d - ???
    70d - ???
    106a - ???

    Sorry to post three times in a row but "Ebor" is right. It's E for eastern, "borg" is the racketeer of old without the G for good and of course the Ebor is a race run at York.

    So, where's the goodies on my outstanding ones;)

    Edit - got 58d

    70d is Bowe , knife man = Bowie -1 - Tommy Bowe Intl Winger.
    I have Edge for 106a but am only guessing as it fits

    Thanks for that. Edge is right - it means both advantage and a nick off the bat in cricket.

    royboy,
    E is eastern; Borg is racketeer, minus 'g' ("no good"); Ebor race meeting is at York.
    Musically, loud is 'F' - very loud is FF! Ein is the German for one/a and Effin is in Limerick (Munster parish) FF in EIN.
