Hey people, can you do me a favour and recommend a quality FPS for the PC for me please?, I'm itching for one having not played a decent one since HL2. The only stipulation is that it can't be a WW2 based game as I HATE THEM. Thanks!.

    Fear,
    Far Cry,
    Chronicles of riddick.

Haven't played riddick yet but I hear it's very good.

Thanks, I have Far Cry & Chronicles of Riddick (should have already said that!), I downloaded the demo of F.E.A.R and thought meh, does it get better as the game progresses?

tbh fear is basicly the samething as the demo for 5 hours...
quake4 is good for some pointless shooting fun :D
and BF2 is good but only if u got broadband

Quake 4 ey?, was thinking about this as it's only a tenner on play.com. Didn't think anything either way about Doom 3, does it still have that Quake feel about it or is it Doom 3 1.5?

    COD 2. Addictive.

    Fear gets boring real fast.

HL2 is good, Half life source is brilliant.

Qualke 4 is ok. Doom 3 is ok. Quake 4 is Doom 3 with a more brownish feel to it. Still worth a pop at only a teener (surprised by the price btw)

Was playing a bit of Quake 4 today and was pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was. Definitely a better game than Doom 3. Far more fun and the weapons are meatier. Also there are slashlights on some guns, thank ****.

Hated FEAR myself, insanly boring and a system hog.

someone already mentioned my idea, Battlefield2 if you have broadband. also UT2004... again, only if you have broadband.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, look into Rainbow6 3 Raven Shield and Ghost Recon, they both should be available in packs with their various expansion packs for around a tenner. They're both a few years old but I can't recommend these games enough. Personally I find the slower, more tactical and realistic squad based gameplay much more engrossing than the average run-shoot-medipack-run-shoot etc FPS. SWAT 4 falls into this category too, and is another great game.

Rainbow six yes but I didn't like swat. Heard great reports about it but was really disappointed by it. host recon wasn't a patch on rainbow six imo, never played it on the pc though so it could be better than I think.

Far Cry if you are tough enough
Fear if you have a Mega PC
Halo - surprisingly good even after all this time
Max Payne 1 or 2 if you want something stylish
No One Lives for Ever 2 if you have a sense of humour
The Suffering if you want to scare the bejasus out of yourself.

And if by engrossing you mean a game that is so immersive that you really believe you are living in the game world then I have to reccommend Mafia.

There's a list of stunners - every one a top quality game and not a Nazi in sight.

I was thinking the same before I played the first COD. Errrr, besides BF1942...

I second Max Payne 2. Its short but very engrossing, and should be available for less than a tenner now.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,406 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Hated both Max Payne game. Thought they were incredibly boring and samey and the plot was terrible with some laughable junior cert quality dialogue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

I concur. Worth a tenner. Still think your shooting yourself in the foot (excuse the pun) by discounting COD. Such a fantastic game. Well worth a look

im still playing Tom Clancy's Rainbow Shield two years on. Off for a game now infact.

Laguna, FarCry and Chronicles of Riddick are two top class games. You'll be doing well to replace them.

Yeah don't get FEAR, it's all hype that evaporates after about 30mins playing it. FEAR would be pretty great if it was the 1st FPS you ever played, but for most us it's repetitive repetition of games that have repeated that formula before.

I got Battlefield the other day and it's pretty engrossing. But your enjoyment depends mostly on the other people playing with you. Wether they're a^holes or too good or too crap (me!, but i'm only learning). And you need broadband cos the current patch is 280MB! Nevermind it being multiplayer.

For a single player you might as well get Half-Life 2 and see what all the fuss was about. I recommend CoD (doesn't rely on WWII to make it good) and Halo too.

Alien vs Predator is excellent, it's aged really well too. 5 years old or so and still scares better than any other fps out there.

No one lives forever is my favourite fps, as someone already mentioned you do need a sense of humour to play it, the first game is good too but it will test your patience.

Maybe you could look into an old game called exhumed or powerstone(same game but different names on different systems), it's really really old but i thought it was the best game on the PS1, the pc version isn't as good but still playable and it's got great atmosfere and level design.

Exhumed/Powerslave has aged terribly. It is available on abandonware but like all build engine games it has sound problems in XP. The Saturn version was better than the PS1 version :p
It's like a very, very primitive metroid prime.

Ghost Recon didn't make the move to consoles very well, in fact that's why GR2 was never released on the PC, it was going to be pretty much a port of the console versions and there would have been uproar by the PC community. Ghost Recon 3 for the PC is being developed by a different company, with experience in making simulaters for various militaries (www.grin.se), than the console version, it should be out next Feb/March. In the meantime the original Ghost Recon is still great fun, available cheap, and there's lot's of free mods available too.

edit: I was a little dissapointed with SWAT 4 at first, expecting it to be more like R6, but after a while I got into it and enjoyed it immensely

Would you recommend GR on the pc (I know you have already, but I played the console version and it was bad)

Same here, ive lost the will to play max payne 2 after a few levels..bulletime..bang bang..bullet time bang bang...crappy cutscence..rinse..repeat

If you want a FPS thats a bit different, try swat 4...very frustrating on the later missions though

:v: < and do NOT try to restrain hostages with pepper spray, when you're actually packing a 45..messy

ah thats part of its cheesy charm. I just finished max payne 2 again. Its corny but its fun and still looks well for its age.

SWAT 4 is great. Play VIP escort online btw if you get it, damn addictive :)

Operation Flashpoint is one of my favourite games of all time, so I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

great at it was, flashpoint probably doesnt truly qualify as a mere FPS though, i couldnt even see half the feckers i was shooting

:v: < try to play it battlefield stylee just for the craic tho.

Tbh, I've never played the console versions myself so I only know about them from what others have said. In general, people who liked R6 love GR on the PC but not on consoles. I guess it depends what you didn't like about the console versions.

    Shogo: Mobile Armour Division.

Oldie, but a bit different. Probably looks like arse now though. Half Giant Stompy Robot action and half feeble man action.

i have to second balfa's choice. get your hands on the complete Operation flashpoint collection. fantastic games, a bit dated on graphics now but they should run an absolute dream on any recent system.
