    I have

    3 computers :
desktop A - one ethernet card
desktop B - no network card
    Laptop - one ethernet card

    one NTL cable modem

    Would this set up work:

if i buy a wireless router and connect it to the cable modem and buy 3 USB wireless adapters for the 3 computers? does it matter that one of the computers has no network card at all?

Well when you put a wireless network adapter in the desktop it will have a network adapter.

You dont have to have an ethernet network card for a wireless network apadpter to work.

Your suggested setup will work just fine...

May I recommend the Linksys WRT54G Wirless router. Thats the one I have with my NTL Modem and it works like a dream...

that would work fine the usb wireless cards will be used for the networking not the existing cards

would ye recommend any of these?

using USB adapters would the computers be able to talk to each other on the network and transfer files to each other etc?

    Cheers

Usb adapters are probably cheaper to make.

Anywho, I'm using the same linksys router as the above poster with NTL. I've never had a problem with it with NTL or Eircom. Works like a dream. Never drops the wireless signal.

You might want to consider the WRT54GP2 with Voip/ata ports.
It would let you use it for voice calls, port your existing number and cancel your Eircon line.
    NTL is great for this.

NTL dont have to do anything for you with this. Have a read of the VOIP forum lost of good information there.

thanks for yer help again, one final question:

anyone recommend a non wireless router for NTL?
and anyone know where I can get a 100 metre network cable? ;)

There is a special offer on at Blueface for a non wireless voip router + 6 months free Irish landland calls for €99. It comes preconfigured. They also have the WRT54GP2.

Pretty sure you won't get 100mtr in a shop. Maplin have a 305mtr cable on thier website for £49.99 - not sure if it's terminated. You could ring a company that does network cableing and ask them to make one for you.
Don't think it's going to save you much money.

thanks mate. i checked the wireless setup, would cost me about €170 for a wireless router and 3 wireless adapters

this non wireless set would cost about €70, anything wrong with these?

network cable is 50 metres. can two 50 metres wires be connected together in some fashion?

could i connect my main pc to the router with a wire and thus only need to buy 2 wireless adapters for the other 2 machines?

would bring the cost down to an affordable €135

    router €75: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=306148&cks=SER
    usb adapter €29 (2 needed):http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=305053&cks=SPC

Yeah, that should do to create a network. There are no voip ports on the router.
You know the big saving you can make is the €25+ per month from canceling your Eircon line and using voip?

hmm the wireless router with VOIP is here for about a €100, for an extra 25 quid it might be worth it if i wanted to switch to blueface or whatever at some stage:

will think about it, what do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭amby666

    I would.
You will get the €25 back in one month if you move your number to Blueface and cancel your line rental.:p

    Hello all,

Ive bought one of the LinkSys WRT54G routers and as has been mentioned before, it was very easy to set up and secure.

However, Im having real problems with speed when I use it. The real problem is that the speeds Im getting on my PC which is wired via Ethernet ports slow a lot when I connect through the router rather than just directly from the cable modem. Could this be a firewall/configuration problem and if so, any suggestions? Im running XP with AVG and Zone Alarm.

    Many thanks,

    Pete

Have you tried it without Zone Alarm? Any possiblity of trying the linksys in another set up just in case there is any fault in it (or borrowing another wireless router to try in your own set up?

Ive tried it without Zone Alarm and still seems to be the same. Just tried a Dell router this morning and its just as slow. Very strange, and very frustrating too. I could understand maybe if the wireless component was slow (maybe interference or something) but for the wired one to be slow too is very unusual. Going to try the router in someone elses setup tonight.

Lads - I am trying to setup a router Linksys WRT54G for my boss using my ntl connection at home as she also has ntl.

Problem is that the speed on the 3mb using irish speed test is only around 1mb.

Swap back in my own Linksys WRT54GP2 (with 2 phone ports) and get the full 3mb ... really strange but sounds like some of the other probs here ...

Notice that you must set the 'Automatic Configuration'-DHCP' setting in the basic setup menu.

On the WRT54GP2 model - you can set this to 'Obtain IP address Automatically' !!!

I know the connection is good ..

Should also mention that this is the WIRED connection

Other thing I did was configure the DNS Servers manually also.

    194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100.

    Any suggestions ???
