did you install the software first before plugging the ipod in?
Supposedly, you HAVE to install the software first in order for it to work.

aye, it has to be formatted for windows or mac before you can use it...

grab the iPod updater off the apple site and give it a lash

    Apple updater. (55mb)

In fairness, Windows should still pick it up as a removable device.

Well it might not be usable until iTunes has been installed, and Disk Use has been enabled..
But fair point.. it should show up in device manager afaik.

But i think the OP's problem is that it aint switching on at all..
Press and hold the button as suggested above..

Aye, when I got my ipod i was on holiday so no access to pc.
I was still able to charge it fine and play the games.

Got home and connected it and windows picked it up.
Installed iTunes and it seen I was using the iPod for the first time and offererd to format it. (Fat32)

If the OP's iPod is flat (as in 0% battary life) when he/she plugs it into the PC via USB it won't show anything on the iPod screen for a few minutes as it gains a wee charge.

If they plug it into the mains instead they'll get a charging logo straight away.
    I figure it's a flat battary.

    Aye. feckin' n00b :p

What cable/charging method are you using GaRy?

surely it'd be getting juice from the usb cable...

It would but not the same voltage as the mains.
That's why I guess the Ipod needs a wee charge from the USB before it powers up and displays anything. That's normal on my 4G iPod. Running ipodlinux on it drains the battary 100% if I forget to power it down.
