Well, an area of low pressure has turned into a tropical storm about an hour-or-so ago, and the National Hurricane Center ("NHC"), will be releasing details within the next hour.

    Current Location:
1000 miles south-southwest of the Azores

Oh I think it is, just that there happen to be 2 in 2003 and pehaps just 1 or 2 before then.

I'm sure Billy TS will add more when he's here.

a hurricane in early January 1955

This is a pdf report about Hurricane Alice, about 1.5 megs

Looks like Zeta may yet become a hurricane...

    From the NHC:
...THE WESTERLY SHEAR OVER ZETA COULD LESSEN SUBSTANTIALLY
OVER THE NEXT 12-24 HOURS AND THE GFDL'S FORECAST OF A HURRICANE
DOESN'T LOOK SO UNREASONABLE ANY MORE.

Yet another record waiting to be broken...

Again from the same NHC discussion:
NO KNOWN HURRICANE HAS EVER FORMED DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY.

The 05 season just doesn't want to end.... or should that be the 06 season can't wait to get started :D

its the 05 season still. any storms that form before february 28th will go on the 2005 list.

That isn't my reading of this quote from here
If a storm forms in the off-season, it will take the next name in the list based on the current calendar date. For example, if a tropical cyclone formed on December 28th, it would take the name from the previous season's list of names. If a storm formed in February, it would be named from the subsequent season's list of names.
