Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Any one have any ideas as to why a laptop will not go past the winXP start up screen. Laptop was working fine up until it froze while backing up a cd. Only way to come out of it was to restart it. Problem is since then it will not go past the black WindowsXP home edition screen.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Leonard

Can you get into Safe Mode? (press F8 a few times, just after the BIOS info comes up)

    Not sure I follow you.

You press F8, you select Safe Mode and it goes and boots, but hangs at the XP screen? Is that correct?

Do you have any virtual drive software installed like Daemon tools or alcohol 120%?

Hmm, tricky one this if you can't even get into safe mode.

Can you remove the CD drive?

Also, can you connect to an external monitor and try booting?

Can you get a command prompt (probably unlikely since safer mode won't boot)?

As a last resort, try a Linux boot disk (Knoppix, for example). This will prove if it is the hard-drive (or some setting on the hard drive). Knoppix boots from CD or DVD. This will prove the system is actually working (e.g. Memory, CPU, graphics, mouse etc). Also, you will be able to get the data off your hard-drive, in case you have to do a re-install of Windows.

convinced its a hardware problem, remove and refit all removeable hardware, and take out any cd's or floppys disks and try again

actually the sisters pc wouldnt boot fully once, just because it had a very scratched dvd in it, not sure why
