Ehh.... i dunno who did ur research but, NO agp is a hell of a lot slower than pci-e.

Are you sure its not a ordinary pci slot you got there?

    P4 2.8 ghz and 1024gb RAM....

Wow, that alot of ram, if its a socket 423, you wont be able to get pci express without upgrading the prcessor.

If its any half decent computer it should have an agp slot, is it a dell by any chance?

    Socket 478 :D

You should have an agp slot if its a HP computer, unless its a business model, which I doubt given the amount of RAM.

You won't get anything remotely modern if you only have pci, but with agp, there's still plenty scope for upgrading to a nice card that'll run modern games.

So do you have any advice on buying a motherboard for the socket i have??

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,606 ✭✭✭djmarkus

you will need a new cpu to avail of pci-express im afraid

Theres no speed increase between AGP and PCI express (with current cards, future cards might avail of the speed) so don't worry about needing to upgrade the motherboard, as long as it has an AGP slot.

Ok, in a nutshell. You processor is old, they dont make very good motherboards for those chipsets any more. You have ONE option - buy a new motherboard with AGP slot and then buy a AGP graphics card. The motherboard is not going to be great but there is nothing you can do about that unless you want to buy a new CPU to!

There are still good motherboards for that socket, but you'll have to look on ebay.

I recommend the Asus P4C800-E. Excellent motherboard for overclocking
