Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I want to archive some files seperately. I want the archive to be password protected in such a way that even the contents are hidden until a correct password is given.

bizp2,zip and tar are installed on the system.

After a frustating 25 minutes reading thorugh man pages for the first time....
How the feck do I do the above with bzip2 or tar?
Are the zip archive passwords still easily cracked, leaving aside using a dictionary word etc?
Will winzip/winrar open tar/bz2 if I email them to a windows user?

7-zip is an open source compression programme for Windows that can open .gz/.bzip2 and many more. You probably also have plain old zip and unzip installed, which creats zip files that winzip can use. It might have some kind of password feature.

bzip2 and gzip will not handle encryption. The unix philosophy is to do one thing and do it well. Both are compression programmes, not general purpose programmes.

In order to encrypt any file (compressed or otherwise), you'd need to pass it through an encyption programme. What level of security do you want? I hear good things about GnuPG as a high security encryption suite. i.e. if you don't want the guards to read what's in there. I think it might be a bit of a hassle to use for simple i-want-to-use-this-password-to-encrypt-this-file uses.
