Portable DVD player problem

I have a portable dvd player and a normal dvd player that both say that they play .MPGs But when I burn a .MPG onto a dvd using Nero (data disk) it wont play. Is there some special way that I should be burning the .MPGs to a dvd disk ?

The players might need them to be burned as VCD or SVCD.
Nero can burn these too, it's been quite a while since I did it but it was handy enough to do.
