Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

xp pro workgroup query

Apologies if this has an obvious answer, seems a straight forward setup but I can't seem to figure it out  . I have a number of XP pro machines networked in a workgroup (and one server 2003 box) previously with very straightforward shares (depending on the machine/file either full write allowance or just read).

What i'm trying to do without much success is to have each share show up on the drive and require authentication to decide privileges, ie a username/password prompt to grant either user or admin write privileges. I've setup the two accounts with respective privileges and assigned them a group (all works fine locally on the machine) and disabled the auto "local users log on as guests" in local security settings but when you attempt to access the share from another machine it simply refuses access. Is there anyway to have it prompt for a username/password short of setting the lan up with a domain?

Ensure Simple File Sharing is turned off.

Sorry my fault, I overlooked mentioning it's turned off on all the xp machines, thanks for the suggestion though.

Have a look in Group Policy (gpedit.msc) under:
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > :: "Access this computer from the network"
See if it's got "Everyone" as one of the users.
I encountered this recently, windows wouldn't entertain share access at all without it... although adding the remote user manually to this list should also work (I can't remember now).
    Definitely worth a look anyhoo.
