Well it screws some of my socs over anyway. Omega, Media Soc and others used Mikado as a means of communicating events and soc news with its members and now they're left in the lurch. Whatever about the other sections of the board that part was valuable and now it's gone.

Most of them are hosted on MiNDS though, if MiNDS for example shut down a LOT of socs would lose their webspace. Not that it's likely to happen, it's an example.

Yeah, but a lot of socs had their own stuff and Mikado. It's a useful service and not every soc has the technical expertise or the time to go setting up their own. The college can't get rid of it just because some people keep posting illegal stuff. It's punishing the majority for the actions of a minority. If NUIM are worried about any of this reflecting poorly on the college, the committee should just slap down harder on the offenders. None of this banning crap where they're back within the week, they should report the poster to the Computer Centre everytime. If that was hanging over them, we'd have less trouble and the boards would be better.

Have to say I agree with you there. The boards were going downhill because of muppets stirring the **** constantly. Maybe this will finally make Mikado run smoothly (assuming they're allowed come back).

Mikado was probably the most over moderated and over sensitive board I've ever been on. It's populated by a staggering amount of children and angsty teenagers.

If you do something wrong, you get a warning. But you can **** up 10 times before you get banned. Ok, there's an instant banning for porn etc... But that's everywhere. Only on Mikado do they treat users like kids and indulge them in that way.

The way it should be is if you break the rules, you get a temporary ban (everyone deserves one chance). You break the rules again, you get a permanant ban. Ip address is noted and if it's flagrant enough, your isp is notified.

None of this bitching and whinging. But there's incessant complaining about voyager. And it's petty complaining too. Just incredibly childish. Constant sniping little comments. I have no idea how it started or what basis there is for it, but I can say with complete and utter certainity that it is not the behavour of a mature adult. It's simple playground bullying.

mikado was a great soc who some stupid people took advantage of and ruined it for all of the rest of us. i wasnt on it half as much as i was last year but when i did log on it was pretty good fun... some people are just to sensitive and cant take a joke...

one of the main reasons i used mikado was to make friends in the college and for that the soc was brilliant. over half my friends in maynooth are on mikado and i may have met them at one or another of mikados events or even simply on line... it is a brilliant way for shy people to gradually get to know some people around the place and gain more confidence in their abilities to talk to people.

i think we really are gonna see just how important mikado was for the life of the college in the coming weeks, with regards to keeping in touch with friends, letting people know of events and distracting us all from exams.

I agree that some of the rules were stupid. But Mikado's a college society and as such has to toe the line according to the wishes of the University. And they're none too happy with porn being posted up on the boards. They look at the boards from time to time, you know.

I think the silly rules about one word posts and stuff like that should be scrapped. Stuff that acutally makes sense, like instant bans for posting porn should be done.

Why do people expect Mikado to give unlimited freedom to users? Even the press don't have unlimited free speech!

Bring back the days of Smiler & Co... no democray, iron fisted modding and if you didn't like the way they modded the boards, tough. It's whingeing over silly things like getting warnings from mods that led to this mess. Accusations of a clique, accusations of bias in modding... you can't please everyone because if you satisfy one group the other starts howling for blood.

Mikado's probably gone to the wall. Ye lot can say what ye like but it's a dark day for the student body. Once again bueraucracy has triumphed over common sense.

Porn's a straightforward case. Most boards ban on sight users who post it.

The college tries to deal with stuff that happens internally without bringing it to the Guards, or the courts if they possibly can. Mikado's only following the example they lead. If Mikado was left to mod the boards (as they should be) and to only bring stuff they couldn't deal with to the College, then none of this would be necessary.

Mikado's not hosted on the college servers. Therefore they're not bound by the computer centre rules. Mikado is a college society and risks losing the means to pay for their hosting by getting their capitation cut off. But if the society is forced to shut the boards, they have no reason to exist.

In short, Mikado is screwed either way.

Excuse me, I was here when the society was still the Engineering soc. I've been on Mikado since Sept 2003 and Smiler was still involved then. And the boards ran well, there wasn't the mess of rules there are now.

And no, anonymity has little or nothing to do with it. Everyone knew at the start who was who on Mikado. It was the Engineering students and their friends. The problems began as the boards grew beyond this core group, with people who joined later starting bloody vendettas on the board with people they didn't even know. And when they met them in real life they couldn't seperate online from real life. That's one problem.

The fact that anyone could join has a lot to do with it too. People who got banned setting up new accounts and stirring additional **** on the boards because the mods DARED to ban them. That's another problem.

Finally, as I said, the mod structure didn't work. There was too many rules and not enough enforcement. Personally there would have been a lot less hassle if the mods just used common sense and ruled their forums like despots.

Because the students are using NUIM's network to access the site. That's why.

Mikado is hosted on H365 as you probably know. The college can only block access to the site and cut off capitation. They can't actually shut down the site because it's not on their machines.

But users who post using computers in NUIM use their network to post stuff on to Mikado. If the user posts porn or acts in ways that the college forbids using NUIM machines then the user breaks the terms of use that they agreed to with the college when they got access.

The fact is that because Mikado is a society they're bound by codes of conduct to ensure they don't bring the college into disrepute.
