    from unison.ie
WATERFORD City Council has been allocated €205,000 in government funding to install CCTV cameras to help police some of the city's most run-down estates and streets.

The Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform allocated €100,000 to the council under its Community CCTV Scheme.

This is on top of a further €100,000 donated by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs through the RAPID Leverage Scheme.

An additional €5,000 will be provided to finance a feasibility study, set up to carry out extensive consultation with residents and community groups within the designated areas.

It is hoped the seven cameras will make three RAPID areas in the city much safer places to live.

The local authority's RAPID project prioritised three cameras for the Manor of St John Community Campus at Larchville/Lisduggan, where a €1.3m childcare facility is being developed.

Two cameras will also be installed at the new park and play area in Ballybeg.

    Mike.

Good to see. What about the city centre though? I believe some of the other cities have CCTV on the streets. Handy for diagnosing the wanton acts of savagery over a given weekend.

Hmm will the CCTV camera's in places like Ballybeg be safe without the guards watching them though? :p

    Exactly.

Personally, I think that having the cameras in town would be more effective. even two cameras around Parnell st.

7 camera's scattered around several large problem areas is kinda pointless, having another 7 would be more effective.

I'll give it a week before we're down to 5 cameras. A month before you can buy one of the missing ones lol
