    Hi,

Not sure why the WebHost board is closed, so I'm posting here. If I've missed something let me know.

Just wondering are there any sites that offer free MySQL and PHP hosting on a non-commercial basis, and free from ads? If not, are there any (decent) companies that will do this for a small fee? I know there used to be the likes of Geocities for static pages, but afaik that had lots of ads and no database support. I've looked around - most companies I've found treat MySQL as a commercial option and bump up the price to over e100.

I'm looking to create a small non-commercial website to share information with a few people. It will probably not need a lot of space, and should generate very little traffic. But it does need database support and I can't afford to spend a lot of money on a host.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    You could try FreeHost

Don't think they have MySQL though do they? Their forums suggest Ketac.ie for that which seems to be a business mirror of theirs? And you have to have a domain name!

I'm just looking for something small and simple, but with a database!

Is hosting it yourself an option? You could set up a simple server on an old Pentium-class PC built from spare/scrounged parts and load a simple WAMP/LAMP setup on it (probably tons of dedicated linux distros around for this) and run it off a cable or ADSL line.

I think it is unlikely someone would want to give you access to their server for absolutely nothing in return.

Do a search on www.webhostingtalk.com and you might find something there...

I was reckoning that, but hoping there'd be something non-business-orientated.

Setting up own host is an interesting idea, might get round to it some day but not really feasible in the ST. Do the BB companies, e.g. NTL allow it? I'd have thought they'd be afraid of it tying up their bandwidth?

I'll have a look on webhostingtalk anyway. Thanks.

Are you in college? Most of the netsocs do it.

Alternatively, what is the content of the site? In the past, I know, kind people from here have volunteered space for various stuff.

You could check the links on the Web Hosting forum. Google threw up a few more free hosts when I did a quick search, but no doubt you’re already seen those as I’m sure you’d never post before you STFW.

There’s a lot of very commercial sites that started that way too, so if you’re looking for free hosting on the basis that you’re not commercial, then being a club, voluntary organization or charity will probably be the only way you’re going to cut ice with people’s good will.

My guess is that you’ll get very little free hosting without adverts (after all, hosts have to eat too). You could get some cheap and nasty hosting (<€5 p.m.) too, but reliability will be a nightmare with that.

Honestly, I do think you’re as well off paying for some hosting - you should be able to find some fairly decent hosting for €100 p.a. or less.
