Well, i was thinking of picking up a nintendo DS as they seem to be going nice and cheap these days and would love to get into another advance wars game. What other decent titles has it got going for itself? Is it still worth the buy?

just bougfht one on sunday...while it doesn't have the same instant wow factor that i got from the PSP, mariokart is damn addictive.

Actually i thought i got a very good deal in HMV of all places. 193 for mariokart ds pack, accessories pack worth 32 euro and another game (got Nintendogs labrador edition)

And by spending all that you get HMV game points which you can then use to get money off another purchase....so all in all, with these points i've got another 14euro off any game.

I reckon thats about as good a bargain as you'll find in HMV

5 game rule...if you can think of 5 games your interested in playing before buying the system, then its prob a good choice.

    for me it was

Sonic Rush (i love sonic games and this is the best of the current lot)
    Mario Kart (addictive multiplayer fun)
Advance Wars DS (hard but great fun)
Kirby Power Paint (addictive because it plays so well with just the stylus)
Castlevenia (I must admit of the 5 games i wanted this is the only one i cant find)

but i picked up Meteos instead which is the new tetris.

Not to mention its Backward compatable with all the GBA games. Meaning games like Metroid Fusion are available to play as well as final fantasy tactics and so on.

The DS is class, it never stopped being worth the buy. There's a plethora of fantastic games already out for it and plenty more on the way..

BlitzKrieg - Castlevania is available from www.play.com - that's where I got mine from in October, even if it's out of stock there, any title they list will usually be back in within a fortnight at most

Buy one. The DS is being bombarded at the moment with brilliant games.

Konami usually only make one batch of Castlevania games. It's stupid because they always sell out in Europe quickly and then become rare commodities. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same with DoS. They did it with the last 3 handheld Vanias.

I've tried searching boards but i must be missing the obvious!!!

"Brilliant" might be a bit strong a word for it ..

The majority of DS games, I feel, are having trouble shaking off the novelty "tech demo" feeling, or the Could-really-be-a-Gameboy-Game (Starwars and Castlevania spring to mind) feeling, and struggling to stand on their own feet as "games" worth €44

Or put it another way, how many DS games have got over 90% from reputable reviewers? Even Electroplankton (the new Tetris, seemingly) only got a not-that-higher-than-average score of 7.3 from Gamespot.

The DS is doing the N64 thing of having one or two brilliant games and a few sh*te ones, as opposed to the Playstation way of doing it of having a couple of brilliant games and loads of sh*te ones.

At the moment I would have trouble recommending the DS to anyone who doesn't have a serious Nintendo loyalty.

A good reference site for reviews.... http://www.metacritic.com/games/ds/
Check the 'All-Time High Scores' on the right hand side.

In my opinion, almost all of the games that have a score of 75% or more are worth getting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

    interesting interesting

I was thinking of a PSP, but imo its too expensive and unlike the DS, there are no games that would make me go out and get a PSP.I would be buying games because i have a PSP!

Animal Farm, Advance wars, Mario Kart and Mario almost seel the deal.

The DS for me still has a better line-up gamewise than the PSP (although Legend of Heroes is keeping me hooked.) Xtra-Vision/Xtra-Game are having a great sale where most DS games and 2 for €40. You can get Advance Wars, Sonic Rush, Castlevania and Meteos all for €80.

Is the DS compatable with old GB or GBC games? Wouldn't mind playing some Links Awakening DX.

Google for Goomba and Goomba Color, and you'll see that its possible, but its a slightly grey area. I have played GB and GBC games on my DS. I'll say no more about it.

    Erm, Animal... Crossing right? :D

Maybe a xxx game involving animals would sell well though, especially with the stylus interaction?, I sure as hell wouldn't buy it but I'm sure it'd be a big hit!

rofl, animal farm. Could be good though.

Anyway, curiosity killed my cat, i went out and got one. So far so good. Got a fairly good deal.Bought the ds plus mariokart (it was a pack) for 150 in Virgin and got 15 Euro voucher for my troubles, than went down to Xtravision and got Advance Wars and Sonic for 40 quid. Might pop down again tomorrow and see if they have any games going for 25. Another game would be worth a tenner.

The problem with Electroplankton is that it's a very specialist game, one for music nuts and artsy types. I love the game and call it the best game of the last few years, but I happen to fit into the "music nut" category above. The DS has it's share of pointless games, but number is definitely shrinking, and now games seem to have far more substance to them than over the first few months.

While I would recommend a DS to anyone I would also tell them to try it out first, because as your complaints in this thread and others prove, it's not for everyone, and I do know a few people who were pretty disappointed by it. But those who did like it loved it.

I've managed to get some fantastic prices on all the games I have. I've had my DS for two weeks and have already got a fair few games. I got a pink DS with an accessory pack, Nintendogs and Mario for £114.97, Project Rub for £6.99 and Sonic Rush, Yoshi, Kirby and Mariokart for €80 off the ever so wonderful TmB.

I haven't been very enthusiastic about any new console launches since the N64 but the DS has a strong line up of games that appeal to not just the Nintendo fans but also to everyone else. I was a Christmas temp at a game shop and we kept selling out of DS consoles and had very few games left in stock. I sold so many different types of people DSes so it definitely has a broad appeal. My little brother keeps whining at me to play Mario, my mum adores Nintendogs and whenever I have lunch at college or am waiting for a lesson I'm letting people have goes on it. So uh... DSes make you popular. Heh. And they're just fantastic. Not all the games are gimmicky. I love the way Sonic Rush was made so that it still feels like a Sega game, yet it's cool to be able to use the touch screen for petting your Nintendogs and making Mario walk more accurately.

I think you're mixing up Electroplankton and Meteos, I have no idea who would describe Electroplankton as the "new" anything. It's not even a game, more like an interactive-music-art-toy thing. Whereas Meteos has the moreish quality of tetris and is a falling block puzzle game.

errr.. what's the difference between one or two and a couple?

    Anyway, I'd have no trouble recommending the following;

    Marmite
    Nintendogs
    Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
    Trauma Center: Under the Knife
    Electroplankton
    Osu! Tatake! Ouendan!
Feel the Magic XY:XX (Project Rub)
    Warioware: Touched!

    Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam
    Advance Wars: DS
    Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
    Sonic Rush
    Kirby's Canvas Curse
    Meteos
    Zookeeper
    MarioKart DS
    Animal Crossing
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

I do take your point about AAA games though, but in fairness, there just aren't as many AAA games for handhelds as there are for a home console. Though there are arguably a two or three in that list. However there are a large amount of games I'd put into solid 7-8 category. Which is what really does make the DS, for me at least, a good buy. Though I do acknowledge that some of these games just won't be some people's cup of chai.

    EDIT: Added M&L PIT

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

You can add Mario and Luige: Partners in Time to that list. Just imported it, great game.

I've owned alot of DS games, and M&L:PIT has been my favourite. Superb game, and 20+ hours long.

Since when has Gamespot been a reputable reviewer???

Sure it's as bad as IGN.

Also, who gives a... aww there's just too much wrong in that post...

DS was the console of 2005, more classics on it than all other consoles put together.

    Ossu! Tatake OUENDAN! FTW \o/

Damned if you, damned if you don't. It often seems that if a game includes features utilizing the touch screen or microphone, they're labled as gimmicky and shallow, while if they stay away from them, they're labled as run of the mill. Sure, there are cases where it's true, but the DS has brought us some brilliant games that wouldn't be possible on other formats.

The DS includes a GBA processor (as well as it's own processor). So when you play a GBA game on the DS, it switches into GBA mode and uses the GBA processor. No emulation occurs. The GBA did the same thing for the GB, GBC. Nintendo could have included a GB processor inside the DS to make the DS play GB games, but they didn't. Probably because of space or financial reasons.

I wish someone would create a GB/GBC emulator for the DS. You plug that into the DS slot, put you GB/GBC game into the GBA slot and away you go. If only...
