Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Roy Keane has been offered a testimonial by Man United. THe game will be against Celtic but a date has not been finalised yet. It will give United fans an the opportunity to give Keano a proper farewell and Keano the chance to say a goodbye.

Em, this was announced after he left.
It was part of his settlement, and why they came to a 'mutual decision', and inturn keano lost about 5 million for his contract.
This was the comprimise, as it'll bring in about 5 million

I didn't think that any details of the settlement where released. Maybe I'm wrong, whats your source for this, or do you have any relevant linkage? I understand that there was a lot of speculation around why Keane was sacked and what the parting deal was, but I didn't see Keano/his representatives or Manu actually confirming anything.

That would be mine, and others, opinions. He was sacked for undermining his fellow players and manger in a, now, infamous TV interview. Then again it could have been one huge big coincidence.

No. Why would you think that.No matter if he was sacked/left of his own accord/mutually agreed etc.. there would have been a settlement. Why would you think differently?

But his contract was cancelled on mutual agreement according to Man United and Keane. Does that not make your opinion an invalid one?

There's no question in my mind he was sacked.

He was told he was no longer required, and after negotiation a settlement was reached and his contract was terminated. Some people might call it mutual agreement, but it was instigated by ManU.

Like PHB, I heard at the time that part of the settlement was a testimonial. This was obviously agreed at the time, and not just now. What has been agreed now is that the opposition will be Celtic. A date will still have to be agreed, and may be around the time of the Scottish Cup Final.

I myself was surprised that Keane wanted a testimonial. A lot of hassle and bullsh!t to go through, although maybe its worth it for a few mill! Though I'm sure he wont be the only one to benefit.

No need to quote yourself, the point is that your opinion is wrong. You're the one that started the "where's your link" business.

Here's a link to the BBC wesite and the the official statement.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/4449396.stm
United's full statement read: "Manchester United has today reached agreement with Roy Keane for Roy to leave the club with immediate effect.

"The agreement allows Roy to sign a long term deal with another club to enable him to secure his playing career beyond what would have been the end of his contract at United in the summer.

"The club has offered Roy a testimonial in recognition of his 12-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

"The club thanks Roy for his major contribution to the club during his years of service."

Can't see any mention of him being sacked there.

Your in no position to tell me wwther my opinion is right or wrong. My opinion is just that, my opinion.

I still say the facts would lend crenedence to the fact that Keane was sacked. That is my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,839 ✭✭✭Hobart

The linkage refers to the club offering Keane a testimonial. It does not state that it will be against Celtic. PHB maintained that this fact had been mentioned at the news conference when Keanes departure was announced. The Muppet in his OP detailed the testimonial. As The Muppet is a Manu fan, I am sure that he was, as was I, aware that a testimonial had been offered as a sweetener to Keane.

My question to PHB was in relation to the detail, as opposed to the general statement. Both your link and Bazmo's link are old news and moot tbh.

Ok. Now I see, it's no longer any use asking people for links as 'opinion' now overrides fact. Wasn't aware of those changes.

What changes? Opinion is opinion and fact is fact. Is that concept too vast for your brain to comprehend?

There are no changes. The equilibrium does not need to be restored. Get over yourself.

I would imagine this is where there is some confusion being caused, i read PHB's statement as that we all already knew about their being a testimonial, but not taking into account that you are adding the celtic part of it into it... i and i imagine others thought you were disputing that the testimonial itself had ever been mentioned and not who it was to be played against

Trawl though this if you want to. There is also plenty of information on the interweb. Have a look at www.google.com and enter the relevant key words. I have no inclination to humour you or bring this thread further off topic.

The testimonial was metioned in the media at the time of his release but there was nothing definite. United have now Publically announced that they have offered Keano a testimonal at the end of this season with Celtice to be the proposed opponents which is why I posted this thread.

Is there any precedent for a club sacking a player and the offering him a testimonial, I have certainly never heard of it happening before.

David Gill announced it as part of the settlement. I believe it's Celtic that they are going to play.

In order for a precedent to be set it has to happen for the first time.

Ok Muppet, let me make this clear. It is not my job to explain english to you or to educate you. I will state this 1 more time:

It is my opinion that Roy Keane was sacked. My reading of the facts that surround the sacking(imo) of Roy Keane on the 18/11/2005 is that he was sacked by Manu. That is my opinion. If anybody is interested in the facts surrounding this case please feel free to read the thread I have linked to above and or use the many internet search engines available to the masses.

I also know, from personal experience, that a number of admins have explained to you clearly what are and what are not your rights on this site. This is despite the fact that you have tried to not only hoodwink them, but many other users of this site in the past. I would suggest that you retract your ownership of anything on this site before it forces you into a second embarresing public apology. Thats just a piece of advice as an aside.

What the hell is going on here?
My question to PHB was in relation to the detail, as opposed to the general statement. Both your link and Bazmo's link are old news and moot tbh.

    That makes no sense whatsoever.
I didn't think that any details of the settlement where released.

The details were released in the general statement which says the following,
United's full statement read: "Manchester United has today reached agreement with Roy Keane for Roy to leave the club with immediate effect.

The parts of the settlement are highlighted in bold.

Well that might make some sense, although it would be silly sense, since every time Keane has talked about a testimonial it has always been against Celtic. Furthermore he had tried to organise one before twice against Celtic, but they couldn't organise a time.

So what in the world are you on about Hobart?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭garred

Personally I think Keane was asked to leave. The usual "mutual agreement" press conference was probably agreed upon. I'd say he voiced his opinions once too many times but he could'nt be sacked because of his reporte with the fans and the fact that over the years, Stam, Ince, Beckham mysteriously left United. Have to state that its just my opinion.
All will be revealed when/if he writes a book;)

It's common knowledge that it was actually Ferguson that was sacked, and immediately replaced with Mick McCarthy, to which Keane instantly walked out, only for United to be accussed of poaching McCarthy, to which McCarthy was forced to re-sign for Sunderland, and Ferguson was consequently re-instated as United manager.

    IMO, of course.
