Smoke and fog give us smog. Breakfast and lunch give us brunch.
What is the name given to these type of words that blend two words together?

    And another one.........

THINK can become BRAIN by changing one letter at a time.
Each alteration must give a new acceptable word.
What is the least number of changes you can make and what are they?

I'm open to contradiction but I think they're called "portmanteau" words.

    from dictionary.com

    portmanteau

n 1: a new word formed by joining two others and combining their meanings; "`smog' is a blend of `smoke' and `fog'"; "`motel' is a portmanteau word made by combining `motor' and `hotel'"; "`brunch' is a well-known portmanteau"
