well paints a fairly tough business outlook for eircom going forward... mind you you could prob write a similar article about incumbants in other eurozone countries too... fairly similar environment for Deutsche Telecom at the mo

    why so?

There is alot in it that is wrong. Smart have not signed up 100,000 customers and I think (though I stand to be corrected) they only have about 2,000 active BB connections.

thought that fact was wrong anyway... seeing as they are still offering the "line rental for life"

If you are talking about the numbers of subscribers to Smart and their BB numbers yes they are wrong but it's the rest of the article that's interesting. Is it really such a bad situation for €ircon? If it is the goverment might have to prop up the pension scheme

So Eircom pay out 109million in dividends this year and yet the government should bail out their pension plan if need be...I think not.

    why so?

    1. eircom are far from fcked
    2. They think eircom are rolling out broadband to make money, dialup is still the golden calf for them.
    3. Smart sign-up figures are out by about 50-70,000
    4. Number of Smart LLU customers are way off
    5. Meteor are a live working mobile platform, Smart 3G are years away, as is proper 3G.
    6. They think Smart will do well and mentioned eircom almost shut them down before. There's a court case about this. Eircom can still win. They make a habit out of winning in the courts if you recall.
    7. Smart are just as debt laden, if not more than eircom. eircom own their equipment, Smart do not.
    8. eircom still have the Govt contract. That's worth a fortune.
    9. The Govt are not going to force LLU through.
    10. ComReg anyone?
