Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is there a (3rd party possibly) piece of software that you can run to check software on your system other than MS for updates ?

You could grab the AutoPatcher XP for Windows XP..a newer version is released each month containing the updates released over windows Auto-Updates ;)

www.secunia.com - lists all the holes in common apps, it does not make it clear what patches you need but handy.

www.shavlik.com - also does patches for many third party programs , not an exhaustive list by any account, and it ain't free.

Nothing in windows comes close to any of the update apps in open source OS's. Stuff like apt-get in debian , but that's mainly due to the propritery nature of the different windows vendors involved.

Another option would be to replace stuff that needs constant patching - eg: ditch Acrobat reader for FoxIt Reader. ( 2.6 MB file vs. bi-monthly patches of twice that size )

download psinfo in pstools on http://www.sysinternals.com
at command prompt run psinfo -s to see what it sees of the installed software list - might be possible to use that to compare to the latest version - though my pc is saying it needs Run Exctrlst from the Windows Resource Kit to repair the performance counters at the moment so can't confirm it lists patch levels for third party apps. Plan B would be to generate MD5 checksums of the apps to see if the match the latest ones - but AFAIK no central MD5 repository exists for latest apps.

    Fix for
Run Exctrlst from the Windows Resource Kit to repair the performance counters
    http://www.sysinternals.com/Forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=71&PN=1
To solve the problem, for sure you need to start exctrlst and search for "PerfOS". After enable the "Performance Counters Enabled" check box, you can run pslist again without problemes!
    Works :)

    Psinfo -s > sw.txt

it doesn't list everything or all versions but may be helpful and can be put in a batch file - possibly useing sget to pull down updates if you know the link
