Take note: Don't use the M50 as an example when the upgrade is done because its six lanes!

The Naas road from Rathcoole to M50 should be eight lanes
Lucan Road to M50 eight lanes
M1 to airport off ramps i e eight lanes proper with addtioal slips
    and of course the M50
Also the M50 bridge should have being widened to Eight lanes in the first place as its near the toll bridge it makes perfect sense and it would be safer too.

    Why?

The M50 from J13-J14 is 8-12 lanes (including ramps) already.

Build more roads; get more traffic.

Fair enough we need many of the national routes upgraded from the dangerous backroads they are but adding lanes to motorways is not an answer to anything.

Particularly with regards to motorways leading into the city, it will just allow more cars to quickly get to the end of the motorway where they will all have to queue up anyway to get onto the overcongested city streets.

Without the toll causing stopped traffic you could probably have gotten away this far without a second bridge. (Ok the backup from the Galway Road roundabout) I don't like the idea of traffic stopped on bridges. For one thing it puts a higher static load on the bridge. Also in the unlikely event of a bridge collapse the death toll would be higher.

Extra lanes generally mean extra cars . The only motorway that should get 8 lanes is the M50 but it wont make the slightest bit of difference. We need far more rail and proper planning that puts people in cities

4 lanes on each side generally means people drive continously in the 3rd & 4th lanes irrespecitve of what is on the 1st & 2nd lanes!! They also tend to fill up. 3 lane motorway on each side with people driving correctly and proper planning strategy and rail alternatives should be sufficient.

In the UK it tends to be inside lane 50mph - trucks, buses ,trainers and merging. Middle lane faster crusing, outside land overtaking. And Mirror, Signal, Manoveur instead of no manoveur OR manoveur, signal like here.

unfortunately too often on a 6 lane road, you get members of the Middle Lane Owners Club doing 50mph...

I advocate building LESS roads and limiting car use by all means possible (whilst improving public transport to take their place..)..Drastic, but it will have to happen one day or no-one will be able to move around the country.....

You see this is a bit hush hush, for the benefit of the population affected by the M50 upgrade (to keep them quiet really, 3 lanes dosnt sound too bad). It is in fact going to be 8 lanes in most places due to 'weaving lanes'. The M1/M50 will have two flyovers and an additional slip, which should cater in the medium term.

Another simple logic I find interesting, is that the upgrade is to 'double capacity'. You cant do that by adding only one lane and this gives the weaving lanes extra significance. When the upgrade is finished the M50 will be the ultimate urban motorway and should, for a time meet our needs:)

Just a point about the M-50 and roads. From what I can gather if you have american or british styled spaggetti junctions everywhere YOUR GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED TO DELIVER A MODERN TRANSPORT INFASTRUCTURE.

Fly overs are necessary since they get rid of round abouts but taking the road network any future is a classic example of bad government. We now need to concentrate on rail, public transport, high dentisty high quality housing and getting people to live in cities and towns.

Highway 401, the busiest in North America, passes across the north side of Toronto and within the city it's up to 18 lanes wide, but the inner 6-8 are "Express" lanes, a motorway within a motorway. The outer lanes are "collectors". If you're passing by Toronto you can use the express lanes which only exit to the collectors every three or four collector exits, and from there you exit to the city. It would be better if the express lanes could be buried or elevated, reducing the huge swath it cuts across the city, but that would make the intersections with the north/south motorways very tricky.

Sounds like a good idea - Port Tunnel Part Deux! Why not have a tunnel going from the M1 under the city and coming out on the N11 near Bray - no exits.

Would probably cost a couple of trillion but sure what the hell!

didn't know it was the biggest in N.America - I had always assumed there must be bigger in LA or somewhere. It's worth noting as well that despite being up to 18 lanes the 401 is normally a car park in rush hour - both Express and collector lanes. (The Express lanes don't bypass Toronto - rather they just don't have access to all interchanges)
