“Are science and christianity compatible?” - Trinity meeting

A rather pleasant girl from the trinity christian union gave me a leaflet about this yesterday. I would normally recommend leaving these types to their own devices, but what did catch my attention was their speaker, who is Peter Childs and who happens to be the president of The Institute of Chemistry of Ireland ICI (the professional body representing chemists in Ireland - although still somewhat over shadowed by the RSC). Unfortunately Peter, judging from his website, is a committed christian.

The meeting is on at 1 pm tomorrow (Wednesday 18th) in the “conversation room” of the GMBuilding of Trinity, so if anybody felt inspired by Dawkins last night they might want to check it out. All welcome apparently and lunch is included if that helps :D

Afraid the middle of the day ain't the best time for me, so no I didn't go. I would have been interested to see what Peter Childs might have to say; since I've seen him talk at one or two chemistry related events.

I do know someone who said they were going to check it out, but she hasn't got back to me yet. I'll keep you posted.

Were you there? Or did you hear any reports?

Prof Fiorenzo Facchini, a specialist in evolutionary theory at the University of Bologna, argued in L'Osservatore Romano that "intelligent design" belonged to the realms of philosophy and religion but not science.

The Vatican article dealt another blow to those Christians in the United States who want children to be taught the theory alongside Darwinism. "God's project of creation can be carried out through secondary causes in the natural course of events, without having to think of miraculous interventions that point in this or that direction," wrote Prof Facchini.

That's great! The pope is on our side for once.

I'm really looking forward to the next issue of "L'Osservatore Romano" where they explain the scientific basis of resurrection from the dead, virgin birth, transubstantiation and the full-body ascension into heaven!:D

But seriously, you're right - it's important to keep strict sectarian divides between the irrational beliefs of the different faiths and regularly examine which has the most rational irrational beliefs.:p

The vatican dealt another blow to those people who believe in rational thought and science yeterday, with it's announcemnet that they think they may have found the required miracle on behalf of pope JP II to make him a saint.:D
    Pope John Paul cure claimed
VATICAN CITY - The Vatican may have found the "miracle" they need to put the late Pope John Paul one step closer to sainthood - the medically inexplicable healing of a French nun with the same Parkinson's disease that afflicted him.
Mons Slawomir Oder, the Catholic Church official in charge of promoting the cause to declare the late pope a saint, said the "relatively young" nun, whom he could not identify for now, was inexplicably cured of Parkinson's after praying to John Paul after his death last April 2nd. - (Reuters)

Really can't wait to see what "L'Osservatore Romano" have to say about it!:p
