Gonna get me a new car (seeing as how the old one was smashed up) so I've got me €5,500 to go and spend any recommendations:

: only interested in saloony cars
: engine size not that important
: safe / reliable car (will have a sprog in the back every now and again)

    Toyota Avensis:

The one above is the 1.8 lean burn engine which won't set the world on fire but is nippy enough, returns good mpgs and has air conditioning which was rare in the Avensis back then.

I had one similar to this, not a moments bother with it and perfect for the sprog. Big boot also good for the buggy or pram.

apparently though according to a mechanic mate of mine they are expensive to fix and not the most reliable make of car, this true or not in people experiences

That avensis is a cheap car, it has low mileage looks like its been loved(or just cleaned) But it wont drop much more in value within the next 3 years. It has A/C which will be handy in summer, parts are cheap. To be honest id be suprized if it is still there.

well my thinking on the expensive to fix thing is that most cars are pricey enough to get fixed and im can fix small problems myself (or my mechanic mate can) so im more concerned with reliability which is why I was thinking the BMW

    thanks for the feedback guys

I heard the A4's had several problems around these years. Can't remember exactly what, but I'm sure someone here will know!

Have a look here, I'm sure it says everything you need to know:

i was responding to the suggestion of a SAAB, which doesn't exactly do reliability that well

On a similar vein, I also have €5k to spend but how to spend it?
Option 1 - deposit on brand-new car. Pro - get a brand new car :) Con - still have to get finance for the balance
Option 2 - buy an older car outright. Pro - no more money to find Con - the cars I'd be interested in are big and expensive to tax and run
Option 3 - a classic like I always wanted. Pro - cheap tax and insurance Con - not so easy to get spares plus may break down more often. May have to import
Option 4- a VW camper. Pro - this is what I really want! Con - maybe spares/reliabilty again? Also import question

    Any thoughts or other ideas?
