MSN causing resolution changes

My sister's computer has started hiccuping.
When she runs MSN, sometimes a hyper-link in a conversation will cause her resolution to go from 1280x1024 down to 640x480! (when she clicks it, that is)
She's already un- and re-installed MSN; didn't fix it. Even worse, she's having trouble replicating it 100%; but it's definitely been there since around a week.

I am at a loss as to what could be causing this; my guess is malware of some kind ( I hope it ain't GPU failure!)

It's an old Compaq, Athlon XP2200+, 768MB RAM, Win XP Home, Radeon 9600pro (underclocked)

Any help appreciated.
