Not sure if its the right place...

My wife would like to do this, she is from the US and has worked for about 2 years in a creche over there. Now she is here working in a customer services job, she would like to get into this again.

What does she need to do? I know there are montessori classes but they cost €1700 fron what i can see... Do you need to have a qualification to work in a montessori school or a creche over here?

Or can you just apply for a job and get training? Oh and what is the money like usually? Chilcare is expensive but to the workers get well paid?

    Hi

I am a qualified Montessori Teacher / Nursery Nurse - I trained years ago and I worked at it for a few years but left it because the rate of pay was very bad - As far as I am aware that has not changed much although there are some creches that pay good so she should have a good look around. There are courses that she can do that would be cheaper than €1700 but I'm not sure if they cover Montessori - only creche staff. In relation to her qualifications maybe she should check out some agencies who specialise in childcare and ask them what she needs to dpo if anything. HTH

The pay is very poor in the childcare sector. Latest surveys show average wage to be 17K. There are lots of incentives and tax breaks to set up your own childcare business.

To work in a creche, you would need at least FETAC Level 5.

If she contacts the Pre School Officers in the Health Board (it could be Health Executive now) and/or the City or County Childcare Committee in your area they should be able to advise her and maybe give assistance setting up and doing courses.

wow only about 17k?? She makes much more than that now... So it seems it is only a good idea if you want to set up your own creche... how can it be so low when it costs close to a grand a month per child in a creche??

The cost of insurance for creches are incredibly high.
Unless you own or manage a creche or are a fully qualified montessori teacher
the wages in a creche tend to be low.
The work of minding and rearing children is simply not valued here.
