EDIT: Spoke to the IT Guy, WI-FI has been restricted to my MAC Address and a few knowen others. Thanks for evryhing guys!

    Ok so here's the deal.

Little kiddies and the PSP's have copped onto a wireless router open to the public in in the place i work and are now looking at porn etc. using our connection. I dont wanna highlight this problem to our IT manager because i know the WI-FI on the router will just be turned off period preventing even myself using it. I dont know the password for the router interface so i cant restrict it myself
    So here's my question......

Is there anything i can put over the router aerial or anything that will kill the WI-FI untill i need it?

Tin foil would only make it worse. TBH, you're technically stealing bandwidth from your employer.

A lead-lined box would do the trick, but it would look a bit obvious.

You're not a tiny bit worried about the world and it's mother accessing the company network ? Say they do something that takes down the companies computers or intellectual property or damages the business ? You can't leech if the company goes bust.

Until you tell the IT people, all that "porn" would be blamed on you unless you could prove otherwise, and if you can prove otherwise then you still take the blame !

Who put the Router in place - If you can cover it with thinfoil then it must be YOURS or your MATES and not an IT / company approved one. In which case remove before they take disciplinary action !

The unit should have WEP and MAC as a minimum.

Access to the server and computer network isnt possible as firewalls are in place and the setup of the network wouldn allow it. This is a fairly large chain of stores are there are around 20 in Dublin alone. As for the professionalism of this company... It's challenged by Mickey Mouse! So far i'd say around 100 MAC adressed have been logged by the router so i've decided i'm not going to highlight this issue and let whatever happen to happen the biggest risk here is what the public do with the internet connection. I'm allowed have my computer in work so the blame will never fall on me when the **** does finally hit the fan.

The very fact that anybody can connect via the router and access the Internet over that connection does indeed mean that the security of the company network has been compromised.

Chances are you will find something in your company's IT security policy relating to your duty to prevent unauthorised access to the network, and to report any incidents or suspicious activity to the I.T. Dept. On that alone, they could **** you from a height.

If you're really that intent on it, inform the IT guy of the issue, but let him know what you've been doing, and ask for a network cable so you can connect your laptop to the router directly.

how do you know that people are using the wifi ?? how do you know around 100mac address ??

What kind of router is it, you obviously have access to cover the aerial, so connecting with a serial connection/lan cable might give you the much needed backdoor.

maybe he could try using snmp to contact the router and switch of the wirless interface. Its possible that because the it department of this company is a joke that the community string is 'private' allowing access all areas.. :)

Why is the wi fi installed in the first place?

If you are using Company facilities without permission you are liable for disciplinary action it is as simple as that.

Why do you have your latpop in work anyways? Are you accessing the internet during working hours? You are leaving yourself very open............

it's very likely if you flip it over that there's a factory reset switch on the back. you could also download its firmware off the net.
