Please don't assume I'm like that because I started this thread. :(
Suicide is a terrible thing and I when I seen this story I thought others would find it as sad as I did so posted here. Not to get kicks or reactions from people.
Very sad the only people the guy was 'close' to were his internet forum buddys.

i nearly committed suicide once when i visited a belgian web site.

Too much jazz and over-exposure to banality will do that to a boy...

    OT: lol

I didn't think the hyped pro-gamer sponsorship gravey train had derailed already, why didn't he just sip from Creative's slushfund?

Apply for a job in marketing and/or advertising, visit a belgian website - then kill yourself.

    Do what WWM couldn't!

depressing. not just the fact that someone killed himself but the fact that millions of people will always know him as the 'gamer who killed himself on the internet' and he'll live on in forum gossip all over the world. I hate this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

whats saddest about it is that so many of the other people in the chat room seemed to care for him a lot it must be awful for them to realise that he was not joking. The fact that he broadcast he was doing it makes me think it was a cry for help its a pity no one got to him on time

Yeah that is true. Back in my geeky gamer days i made good friends with other gamers in a chatroom. would've been awful if i'd found out they'd died. Have left that scene now but i guess if that's his social circle then yeah he was making a cry for help. Still bad place to do it... I mean all those guys ever do is take the piss out of each other. I probably wouldn't have taken it seriously.

    Exactly.

Why is it that "GAMER" is emblazoned all over the headlines on this story?
More negative publicity that the genre doesn't need.
Sorry for the guy and his family and friends and all, but why do the media feel the need to jump on this story and attach labels. Also as mentioned earlier the media has innacurately reported on this story:
    http://www.gaming-age.com/news/2006/1/19-39

    Sensationalist IMO.
People all over the world kill themsleves everyday in obscurity, yet mention something like computer games or the intarweb was related and it's worthy of making headlines.
I wonder what Jack Thompson's take will be on this whole thing eh?

Yikes, thats weird. I visit Gamefaqs now and again.

Its sad, but not as sad as one i heard a while ago. Was about a chinese guy over in america who had a blog running. The most recent entry was how he had just let his sisters ex into the house to wait for the sis to come home.

The accompanying newsarticle was about a man who had killed a guy in his house after being let in.Than waiting for his ex girlfriend to come back. And than killing her.

He is dead now, why would he care what we say about him.
I would feel sorry for him if it wasnt for the fact that he did it all over a webcam. Rather then trying to improve his situation, he wanted everyone to feel sorry for him. Well not me.

As the link I provided in my above post states:

To start, the story of the suicide is inaccurate--according to the administrators' account of the tale at no point was "Kuja" on a web cam. Nor were there any "meeting spots" or any physical visit to his home. As well, the credited administrator "Boyan Georgiev" is the head of "Max Effect," a design firm the web designer for MetalGearSolid.org is employed by, not an administrator of the involved website.

    http://www.gaming-age.com/news/2006/1/19-39

So I guess you can start feeling sorry again....what the presence of a webcam one way or the other would have changed about the fact that a human being just took their own life escapes me

the difference a webcam or post to a forum makes, is that he would not use these things unless he felt people cared about him. so knowing people cared, he went ahead and killed himself. he suffered in life so he wanted others to suffer/morn because of his death. if he just took his own like i would feel sorry for him. But just look at what he did intentionally to that community.

I agree, you don't know what goes through a persons mind to bring themselves to do this, it's sad. I had a friend a few years back that killed himself and it's not something to make fun about.

Troll. Just like the majority of RB's posts. Spotted similar rubbish from RB over on the Goth thread.

I just hope you never have enough negativity in your life to send you over the brink.

Jack Thompson has got in on the act, he sent a letter to Metalgearsolid.org, a site where Kuja was well known
Your "gamer friend" will find peace through the Lord, Jesus Christ, but sadly it's too late for that.

There is a void in every heart. You can fill it up with the things of God, or the things not of God. This unfortunate soul chose to fill it up with combat games. The playing of these video games is masturbatory activity, meaning senseless self-stimulation. If you gamers could use a dictionary you would know that that term is not necessarily a sexual one.

The real tragedy here extends beyond the life and death of this one fellow. There are literally millions of young people and young adults whose despair is deepend by turning to the things of this world and then finding them meaningless.

All of you gamers need to put down the controllers and get a life. The utter inanity of the vast majority of postings here shows how vapid "gaming" really is.

You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.

Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess.

Sad. Sad for all of you."

    They replied
"Once again, Mr. Thompson, you've proven that your ignorance knows no bounds. We're not going to participate in this war you wish to wage against us -- we're bigger than that. We're bigger than you.

This is a case where our tragedy is greater than the sum of our transgressions. The fact that you want to exploit the loss that both we and his family have suffered to forward your own selfish, religiously driven ambitions speaks volumes about the integrity (or lack, thereof) of your character, and it only serves to strengthen our resolve.

You can continue to try and discredit us and insult us, though no true man of God would do such a thing. We pity you and your ignorance, and only hope that someday you can come to terms with and mature away from your biggotry. As Metal Gear Solid fans, we have learned to believe in the best of individuals. We've learned to show charity. We've become better people, and through the loss of our friend, we've become a closer-knit community.

We forgive you, Jack, and we hope that God will do the same for you."

Rb_ie, thats out of order now. The guy was obviously not happy with this life, and was in more pain to be alive.

Im deifinitely not condoning it, but is not an easy choice to make either. The method of suicide that he chose would have left him in alot of pain before he died. He needed serious help, very depressed from what I've read. Everything is a big effort when your depressed, that includes getting help for yourself. Its very sad tbh, and this kind of thing is getting more common.
