I was there a few weeks ago. I thought it was really nice, good food, fairly priced and pleasant staff. What more could you want?

Great. Thanks for letting me know. Lokking forward to it now

the food's quite good - reasonably priced, nothing too fancy.

havent been myself but my friend has. they waited 45mins for their food, and then were brought the wrong meal. by the time it was all sorted i think it was about an hour.

she said it was nice enough when it did eventually come, but wouldnt be in any hurry to go again

Didnt think much of the menu it has to be said. We ended up going to Vino Pasta. Truth be told, one of the nicest Italian meals I ever had. Reasonably Priced aswell.

On another note I hear Fusion is closing

Fusion is a disaster of a restaurant... won't be missed. Have had 2 awful nights there!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭Johnc72

me too funny enough. Food was awful

  • Registered Users Posts: 309 ✭✭Manny7

I thought Fusion was OK, nothing special but not too bad. Can't beat Vino Pasta though, we've been there every couple of weeks since we moved in.

You should try the Hungry Monk... The restaurant upstairs is expensive but worth it.There is also a wine bar down stairs that do great food at really great prices and excellent service. Its very small in there so you should arrive early!! they open at around i think... the food is lovely.

Yeah I'm bringing my girlfriend there on Valentines, what a romantic, eh? Really looking forward to it, it looks great.

The Hungry Monk and The Royal Park (EDIT) got great reviews (I think, some type of top food critics award also) in papers I've read. Haven't been to either yet!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11 mairead morris

You must mean the Royal Park Chinese Restaurant. Yes it has received brilliant reviews from Paolo Tullio (from RTE's The Restaurant) one of Irelands top food critics. You can see the reviews in the restaurant hanging framed on the walls. Food is top class.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭Johnc72

have agree with you, Royal Park serve the best chinese food I've had.

Chakra, the new Indian in the Meridian Centre, is also excellent; as is the Indian Spice takeaway beside Xtra-Vision.

  • Registered Users Posts: 80 ✭✭hc

Would highly recommend Chakra. Was never a fan of Indian food til i visited there. Also love the Hungry Monk and Vino Pasta. Didn't think Fusion was too bad when we tried it, surprised it's closing, but ah well!

Has anyone trid Diva or Divo, down at the harbour above the pub? It used to be Coopers, then Ouzo I think. Heading there this weekend, apparently Paulo Tullio gave it a good write-up...?

Was there a couple of times during the summer. On both occasions the service was dreadful to be honest and the food was quite bland. Secondly, make sure that you are not seated beside or close to the piano or you will spend the whole night straining to hear what your companions are saying. I won't be going back there anyway. The Hungry Monk is by far and away the best place to eat in Greystones if not in Wicklow. Top food and service and a great atmosphere both upstairs and in the bistro.

  • Registered Users Posts: 80 ✭✭hc

Ah right, not looking forward to it as much now! But sure we'll give it a go anyway! Thanks Joliegood

On the plus side, it is a great setting and Danns is a fine pub for post or pre dinner drinks. Will be interested to see if there has been an improvement.

Will write a full report next week to let you know how I get on!

We went to Diva a couple of weeks ago after reading Paulo Tullio's review on his website and I honestly thought we were in a different restaurant -- the food was incredibly bland and really unimaginative. It's so frustrating going to an Italian restaurant and seeing the same boring old crap on the menu. If you want a real Italian experience go to Campo de Fiori in Bray, it's about a million times better than Diva and fantastic value.

My friend took me to chakra when i was home there about 2 weeks ago. Gorgeous interior and a such a great menu, we had the early bird and i had lamb tikka, it was really good i'm so used to having an indian on every corner here in england but the menu and the food in chakra is completly different to anything i'v had here. I would totally reccomend chakra! ( my mate works there so service was exceptionally good ;) )

Having lived in Greystones now for 3 years I think I've been to almost every restaurant/take away (except the new one over the Burnaby) in that time.

In no particular order (except perhaps as you approach them from Charlesland.

Script: Not mad about it. Food/service is fine, but not nuts on the decor and if there's a party on downstairs the music comes right through.

Cherry Blossom: (Danny's to the locals) It's not a great Chinese, but we keep going back. Wifey is a native and so she practically grew up on the Chinese from there. As a result we're always treated well, usually get a drink or two on the house and if we call for take away, usually get a can of beer each thrown in!

Homans: Tapas is being served on weekend evenings for summer again. Yay. Love Homans, even if the food is a little over priced for what it is!

Vino Pasta: STAY AWAY. Three times I've eaten there in the last 6 years. Three times I've received the wrong food, three times they've put stuff on the bill we never ordered. I've also heard of customers being short-changed. Food is okay though. Service terrible.

The Burnaby (bar food): It's okay, service a little slow. When we ate there, we had to pay for drinks seperately, which is inconvenient.

Jokers (Take away): Don't. Just dont.

The Hungry Monk: Superb food, lovely atmosphere, game (in season) is amazing. Amazing wine list (Pat was a wine dealer before opening here). It's always great for special occasions and as wifey's family are known here too, we always get looked after (which means Pat always comes along for a chat at the wrong time!). Downstairs is great for a one-plater. The wines on the blackboard are always great value and a safe bet.

Three Q (formally Baker J's): Haven't eaten there since the name change, but was a great coffee shop (when it was open!).

    Chakra- Jaipur: Not been yet.

Fusion: Not mad about it, but the service was great.

Nosh n' Coffee: It's a shame it doesn't get any sun on the tables outside. It's a fine coffee shop and the paninis are good.

Bocelli's: Love it! Service, food, wines, coffee, desserts, atmosphere are all good. We went for dinner first time there and the place was buzzing. Lunch was great value on our second visit, even if it was very quiet!

Bel's: It's my mother-in-law's favourite (because of the smoking area at the back), so we go quite a bit. The food is good, and the portions generally are large. Service is patchy. One waiter in particular is a grumpy sod (you'll know him the second you see him!). Reasonable value. On our first visit there, one of us had ordered ice cream for dessert. Was interesting to see a chef then run across to SuperValue and return with a block of HB Vanilla!

Indian Spice (take away): Love it. Everything is freshly prepared and if you have nothing better to do for the 30-40 minutes it takes to get your food, you can always look into the kitchen and watch the process! Only gripe is they tend to add an individual twist to every dish, so be careful what you ask for!

Pineto Classico (Take Away): Your standard takeaway, does everything you'd expect and it's all good (except the batter burgers, which aren't very nice!). I go there for my weekly fix of Southern Fried Chicken!

Somervilles (formerly Poppies): Next to the church, this is possibly my favourite coffee shop on the planet. It's a bona-fide olde worlde tea-shop, a collection of different tables and chairs, none of which match. Lace curtains that only go some of the way up the window. Lovely cakes (especially the lemon drizzle cake) and nice hot food too! If you're looking for catering, Avril will supply food and it's well worth it.

Opresco: Over the Beach House, this place has gone through several incarnations in the last few years. It's not great, but it's not bad. Portions are good, but the food is average. One thing I did notice when we were there was that it seemed to be full of teenage couples (except us, of course!).

Coffee Shop in Tesco: Meh. Average. Only worthwhile if you want to give your feet a break after following wifey around the supermarket while she compares nutrional values of everything in the store!

Honourable mention: The reason we've not been to Chakra yet is becuase we go to Milla's, over the Wicklow Arms. Go. You'll love it. If, unlike me, you have knees that bend, try the low tables for an authentic experience. Milla's specialises in Goan cuisine, and the staff are all gems!

Finally, wifey tells me there is a sign on the window of the Coffee shop next to Superquinn looking for staff. I guess that means it's opening soon!

Has anyone tried the Indian Take away in Delgany, Just above/beside the Wicklow arms. The food from there was top notch and at a fairly decent price. Will be interesting to compare it to Chakra- Jaipur..... Sounds like I have given myself a mission.

They dont have a take away licence, so it comes from Newtown, and could be cold by the time you get it home, at least thats how it was when it first opened......

Went to Diva on Sat evening and I have to say it was fab!! We had been there a few months ago and had been disappointed in the Sunday lunch so we said we would give it another try as we couldnt get a booking in the HUngry Monk or Vino Pasta and it was so worth it. The food was excellent as was the service. There was a guy playing jazz on a keyboard and the atmosphere was great a real buzz and the bill in the end for 2 starters 2 mains 1 bottle of wine and and desert and coffe was €61.00!!! NOW THAT IS GOOD VALUE!!! We will definately be going back again and highly recommend it!:D

18 years in Greystones, some notes:
Script: Not mad about it. Food/service is fine, but not nuts on the decor and if there's a party on downstairs the music comes right through.
Was there shortly after the opening. Hope it's gotten better, it wasn't much to write home about. Not bad as such, just wholly unmemorable...
    Cherry Blossom:
Ugh. It's the Jokers of chinese takeaways. 'Nuff said.
Vino Pasta: STAY AWAY. Three times I've eaten there in the last 6 years. Three times I've received the wrong food, three times they've put stuff on the bill we never ordered. I've also heard of customers being short-changed. Food is okay though. Service terrible.
Never ever had a bad experience there in the past five years. The Filetto al Pepe is wonderful, and the fish cake starters are great, I rarely order anything else anymore. And the white chocolate creme brulee is lovely.
Jokers (Take away): Don't. Just dont.
    Damn right.
Nail, head, wallop.

Haven't ever had better indian food in Ireland. Love the Murgh Saagwala, it's always perfectly done. It's also won Bridgestone awards three years running. Didn't know you could watch in the kitchen, wouldn't mind doing that (it always struck me as being a bit akward for the chefs while they work, not to mention dangerous, since you have a lot of sharp things, hot things, and chefs working under pressure).
Pineto Classico (Take Away): Your standard takeaway, does everything you'd expect and it's all good (except the batter burgers, which aren't very nice!). I go there for my weekly fix of Southern Fried Chicken!
Grand for a quick burger and chips, better than Jokers by a country mile, but it's strictly a "need fuel for fire, no time to cook" sort of deal.
Opresco: Over the Beach House, this place has gone through several incarnations in the last few years. It's not great, but it's not bad. Portions are good, but the food is average. One thing I did notice when we were there was that it seemed to be full of teenage couples (except us, of course!).
Is it still called Opresco? Was better as Coopers. The new decor is a bit too naff, I miss the old look. Good seafood. Paullo "the annoying runt" tuillio raved about it in an earlier incarnation.
Coffee Shop in Tesco: Meh. Average. Only worthwhile if you want to give your feet a break after following wifey around the supermarket while she compares nutrional values of everything in the store!
Not sure why anyone would even bother to be honest.
That said - the Tesco itself has a decent range of stuff, the bakery is okay if only cooking for a small window, and the butcher's longside the coffee shop is quite good. For spices&herbs though, Nature's Gold down by the DART station is far better.

23 years in Greystones & I promise you, on many an occaision have been charged for items we did not have , extra put through the CC machine, and short changed. Only went for years because a friend of mine knows the owners, but even she will not go back.....and on another note; after organising a birthday cake from Superquinn, for my brothers birthday a few years ago, they wouldnt let us bring it in! having gone there for years, they claimed health & saftey ( A superquin Cake, cant get fresher or safer then that!) I know it was because they fiqured no one would have desert, so at 7.55 ( table booked for 8 for 10 people) we cancelled & Pat ( Hungry Bistro) took us & let us have our cake & eat it!! that is customer service & that is why we always go back.
So Sorry, Vino is deffinately a no no!! & living in Greystones for a number of years has no relevence, bad service is bad service & they only stay open because it's the easy option, or newbies know no difference.

On the Jokers vs Pinetos thing

    you can't beat Jokers,

The staff in Pinetos are grumpy old sods, and their burgers aren't up to much at all.
