    C + 1/2 O2 = CO

    1/2 N2 + 1/2 O2 = NO (i think)

Sorry i got the nitrogen monoxide wrong its actually:

    1/2 N2 + 1/2 O2 = NO

    sorry about that

    Should these reactions not be:

    2C + O2 = 2CO

    and

    N2 + O2 = 2NO

because 1/2O2 and 1/2N2 cant exist???

No, sure it has to be 1/2 because you're only getting CO and NO at the other side not 2CO?? isnt it? meh...im not sure

2CO and CO are the same substance. You have to balance the equation.

It could never happen that you could take 1C and half of O2 to make 1CO.The absolute minimum would be 2CO.

    It's a theoretical thing Liam.

It is just your equation divided by two.

Personally I prefer not to use fractions but it's acceptable and can be taught that way.
