    Hi there,

When using Metro (Basic Package) can I be identified by my IP address? Does the fact that one does not get a static IP mean I keep being given different ones, or it is easy to identify people?

If not, any ideas about how to hide your IP address would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Proxies are for hiding your IP.

Metro probably keep records of what customer was using what ip and at what time..so yeah, i'd say you're fairly identifiable...

As said already a proxy will give you a marginal amount of anonymity. It all depends on who you are trying to hide your IP from. In any case if somebody wants to identify you they will. Metro will almost certainly maintain logs to map your session to an ip.

    As the above posters said.

The only way to get total anonymity (sp?) is to wear a disguise and go into an internet cafe.

    Thanks for the tips.

So how do I set up "a proxy".

I had a quick look on google and it seems complicated:(

You wouldn't really go about setting up your own in your case because you want a proxy to be on a different network. Google for an 'anonymous web proxy' or something.

    Eg: The first google result

But setting up your own proxy is always the best

No matter what you use someone can get your IP but they would really want to get it in the first place.

IE Proxy have no terms or conditions, someone with power could get a court order to hand their records over if they had a legite reason...

so ya better not intend to do naughty things....

What are you trying to hide?

Might be worth mentioning that proxies don't generally work with P2P networks..

also you need to use a specific type of proxy for certain types of traffic, e.g. a http proxy is only hiding your ip address during a http session, and your not hidden from the actuall proxy of course.

so the answer to your question is yes you're always going to be visable to _something_

Tor + Privoxy if you really want to be hidden because you're doing something that you really don't want people to know about...
